The Free Concert Ride has been taking riding from Hollywood/Highland to the Santa Monica Pier every week with no problems.
Down Hollywood Blvd to Fairfax - L
to Sunset - R
to La Brea - L
to Santa Monica Blvd - R
to Barrington - L
to Idaho - R
Idaho turns into Colorado and ends at the pier.
On the way back stay on Santa Monica til just before Beverly Hills, the ride parelle to SM on that road til Doheney.
Doheney - L
to Santa Monica Blvd. - R
to Fairfax - L
to Hollywood Blvd - R
You can take the subway under the moutain to avoid going over Cauenga/Highland, or just go over them if you like.
We will be doing this route tomorrow night on my ride.

Why would you wish to ride in Westside traffic ?
Valley streets to Sepulveda pass seems easier.

You can try taking Ventura Blvd or adjacent route to Van Nuys Blvd. Up Beverly Glen and then down either Benedict Canyon or better yet Beverly Glen down to the other side of the world. That is a pretty ride and there is lots of room accept for the last 1/4 mile til you get to the top to Muholland from the Valley (it turns into two tight lanes and the cars all of the sudden don't want to share a lane with you) Yes Santa Monica Blvd is smooth as I remember. I would suggest staying away from Laurel Canyon to get over the hill. Not very bike friendly in my opinion for various reason.
Also when you get to the top of the hill, you have Muholland Dr, which I always found to be a blast riding on up there. You could take that over to Sepulveda and take Sep down to the lessside.

I love riding through Westside traffic, lots of people-watching and cafes and neat shops. And traffice does not really affect me, I just ride past it all. It's a very scenic and amusing ride. Ventura over Sepulveda is nice too, just different.
