So on Tuesday night I went to this health class I'm taking from 7-10 with my dad. He had taken the bus to meet me halfway and then I picked him up in the car I had borrowed. Since he took the bus he locked up his bike on the corner of Vermont Ave. and 24th with a u-lock. When I drove him home guess what wasn't there? they had even left the U part of the lock laying on the ground. It must have been stolen between 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.

WTF. i got my dad into biking. someone gave him that old mountain bike for free so I went with him to the bicycle kitchen and helped him fix it so it was ridable. He is not allowed to drive so he was really becoming dependent on his bike like all of us have. He is like 98% broke so he can't buy a new bike and even used bikes are expensive for him.

I don't even remember what kind of bike it was! (really stupid i know) it was an old mountain bike, i think the frame was like white and grey spotted? and it had a HUGE metal basket attached to the front.

Does anyone have a bike my dad could borrow until he could get his own again? he is between 5'10 and 5'11 and is overweight so he would probably need to get a new seat. you have no idea how much this would mean for his life.

Fucked up.
I'v had two bikes stolen on two diffrent occasions.
I know what he's feeling.
Lifes tough. Sorry.

yeah i know it happens to so many people. i would CRY if it happened to me.

i don't get how the person did it. do they just somehow pick the lock? that takes time no? someone must have seen, Vermont is such a busy street. *sigh*

That really bites!
They probably have a suitable frame at the bike kitchen or bike oven that could be fixed up.
the older/ heavier frames don't get snatched up as quick.

if you think it is worth while consider doing some kind of fund raiser to help him get a bike. I think you'd be surprised how many people would be willing to step up and help another biker out.

I've got a complete POS MTB he can borrow indefinitely. It works, more or less, but it's about 40lbs and not very fast. Chances are he doesn't weigh more than me, so the seat should be fine. (If he's going to use it seriously, it could probably use new brake pads, a little wheel truing, repacked hub bearings, etc., but it's rideable now.) If anybody's still following this thread, post up if you've got a spare bike available, as FF's dad may need one built for normal-sized folk.

Sorry to hear this. I would also try freecycle.org, and craigslist. You might get someone that has something there too.

and no i dont bike from vermont to school. thats just where my dad lives. i bike from wilshire and doheny.
