Choppercabras 10th Annual Halloween Ride!!
Where: Atomic Cycles 17322 Saticoy st. Van Nuys, CA 91406 (818) 609-0113
When: Sunday, October 31st, Noon Sharp!
Choppercabras 10th annual Halloween Ride is a bicycle event unparalleled in all of Los Angeles, perhaps all the globe! Bicycles bashed, blood spilled, hot dogs eaten, 2 wheeled mayhem unlike anything you’ve ever seen! (unless you’ve been to one of these before.) And it’s all free! Did I mention hot dogs?
What you will need:
1. You ready to have fun
2. A bicycle in good working order
3. You dressed up as a character that you’d see in any old Japanese monster movies, it’s easy.
A note on the time. Do your best to arrive on time or you’ll miss out on all the fun, we don’t wait for you, as there will be hundreds of people there on time ready to ride. We start at Noon, not hipster time, but real time.
How to get here:
By Car:
101 Exit Balboa, head North until you hit Saticoy, make a left go till you see Louise, park. The event location is ½ block west of Louise in the south side of Saticoy. Parking in the back will be taken up by event stuff, best to park on the street.
From 118 as above but south on Balboa, make a right on Saticoy.
From 405 exit Sherman Way go West until you hit Louise, North on Louise as above.
By Bike:
Take Orange line to Louise, North on Louise until you are at Saticoy, go west on Saticoy, follow the noise and smells, you’re there!
By Plane:
Look for mess of bikes, parachute into Ralph’s parking lot, and watch out for Coldstone patrons, they may eat you.
As always you get some free shwag at Choppercabras events.
Buttons
Spoke Cards
Route Maps
Events:
The Spine Adjustment Race:
6 bicycle contraptions that have a wheel on the front, cranks and casters on the back. Hard to control? You bet! 10 laps will test the racers riding skill and lower back muscles. Fun!
The Super Sidehack Battle Royale:
A bmx bike with a sidecar, two people per bike: one rider and one monkey. Add foam weapons, beat the crap out of each other. It’s a footdown contest so if any part of your team members body touches the ground including your feet, you’re out. May the strongest survive. Because the goal is beating on each other, injury is an absolute certainty! You will be hurt, possibly bad, expect the minimum of bruises, mashed fingers and perhaps a broken nose or two.
You’ve been warned. If you participate in this event you will be injured.
The Demo Derby:
20” BMX bikes with rams on the front. Special monster costumes will be mandatory and provided for this event. Other than that there are no rules but to win. Destroy your opponents bikes and keep your riding, the last one wins. Grueling and a sure thing for bodily harm, injuries, pain , and later discomfort. You will get hurt or your money back!
*Special bikes will be provided for these events. You still need a bicycle for the ride on the ride.
The Ride:
We will do a few miles at a leisurely pace through the mean streets of the San Fernando Valley. We ride a few miles, we go slowly, and we try and keep the ride together. We like to see all riders occupy the right lane only of the street so we can co-exist with traffic and maximize our fun. The cause if fun, pick fights with people in cars on your ride, not ours. This is a cruise, a put, a crawl, not a race just so you know. When we get done we will be back at Atomic Cycles for the bb-q. Did I mention free hot dogs?
The BB-Q:
Back to base for some dogs and conversation, now time to relax. Dogs are free until they run out. There is a bar in the same parking lot, a liquor store and grocery across the street just so you know.
The End:
Hang out as much as you like, but the show is over folks! Help cleaning up is always appreciated.
Notes/FYI/etc.
Show up with a bike ready to ride, any kind of bike is welcome. Do not show up with a basket case or a bike that needs major repairs, you may not get them.
I do not loan bicycles for the ride. Bring a bike that is rideable to the ride, save yourself the embarrassment and be ready.
Dress up in costume. It’s ok; you’ll still be “cool” if you dress up.
Show up on time. Noon. I recommend not partying until 5 am the night before if you want to make it on time. I’ve heard all the excuses and I don’t care because it is you who will miss out.
Filmers:
I want copies. Feel free to photograph for personal use. Professional use, get in touch first. I want copies.
The Ring of Death.
The Ring of Death or “ROD” is the ring of car tires that the events take place in. Entering the ring of death means you are accepting that you may get hurt, will most likely get hurt, and are not going to cry to me later about your injuries. If you jump in the ring to take a picture, you may get hurt, you may damage your gear. If you find this too dangerous, then by all means: STAY ON THE SAFE SIDE OF THE ROD! You have been duly warned.
Audience Participation of aforementioned events.
If you want to participate in an event you may understand that you may (well, for sure) come under some form of bodily harm. There have never been more serious injures than some cuts and bruises but just so you know, these events are a bit rough. No kids may do an event but the ride. Sorry.
If you are a spectator and interfere with any of the events, you are accepting the fact that the event participants can and may hurt you. In other words: if you want to join in, then do so. If not, watch, but not both.
Do not throw the car tires. Don’t. It breaks up the action.
The list of Yes!
Can anyone come?
Is it ok for kids?
Can I help?
Can I bring some drinks, food for everyone?
Can I have some fun?
The list of NO’S!
Can I borrow a bike?
Can we ride scooters, vespas, mini bikes on your ride?
Do we need to belong to the Choppercabras to ride?
Can I film your event without asking first?

or Anyone wanna meet somewhere then head there?

One of the first things I have to do is get a staging area cleared for all the event bikes.
The weeds turned into bushes and they were as high as the fence. All the stuff you see leaned up against the wall was hidden under it. That's right an entire soapbox derby car. The mower is done. I killed it, it has no compression. Traded a wheel build for a near new Toro. Chariorts in the center of the pic needed to be extracted as well. I'm going to do half the yard so I can move things around. I really let it go this time.

I have been in that yard. It is a wonderful, terrifying, magical place.
I'm trying to bring a lot of new people to this event who don't ride, in hopes of getting them excited about bikes.

What is it? Well I'm making 6 of these total for the "Spine Adjustment Race". Not my idea, I took it from this guy Atomic Zombie, he makes all kinds of cool stuff. More to come....

There will probabababably be a ride from the end of the REDLINE (NOHO STATION) to the event. Proababbaababbaly meet at 11am there, and ride to Atomic Cycles. It's a pretty routine ride.

Every year I drag these poor bikes out from the weeds and get them going again. Some times I can get the wheels straight enough that they don't hit the frame (which is all I'm shooting for) This one will need a new rim however. Most don't as it's fatigue of the rider that usually gets them out of the demo-derby, the second is a thrown chain.

I might need more more so if there's uphills >_<

Being on time is important. I don't waint for laggers, best to arive a little early than be late and miss all the events. I've had people show up at 4 pm thinking that we're just getting started, no we're just finishing up, want to help throw these car tires in my truck?
Don't be late.

I usually make 100-200 of these. Don't want to spend the money on laminate so they are done old schoo, white glue on a playing card. Made lovingly by hand in the USA.

Trophies are done. There's only three events this time but one is with a partner and I expect it to take a while, well they are all longer duration events this time. More bang for your buck (free) vs. time (from 12-4 pm) Hope to see you all there.

I've knocked off the following:
Flyers, cleaned yard (went through two lawn mowers to do that), Side hacks, ram bikes, swing bikes are near done, Trophies, spoke cards, route maps are done. The costumes are taking a while but when they are done they will be awesome. Lot more to do. I hope everyone that has come in the past and has not made one yet will make the effort to come out this time as it's been 10 years of doing the shit and i 'd like it to be big.
thanks.

a taste of the monster masks:
they don't store well so I'll have to wait till the end before I finish them...

Good times, I’m trying to think of some thing to say after a decade of doing crazy bike events, some wisdom or insight but I can’t seem to come up with anything to say. Hope you all had fun and will bring friends to the next one.
One side note, I did have a pissed neighbor because someone threw trash in their yard and I’d like to say that we’re better than that people, we need to put on out best face for the community at large.
Thanks
Paul.
