For you dorks out there that may have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs here is the century route for mapmyride.com and it's app. using this you would be able to see yourself on the path in real time and record your data. however since we will be riding for many hours and the iPhone GPS is a battery hog then you may only want to turn it on when you really want to double check your navigation and what is coming up.

There is one part of the route I'm not sure of and that is the Fiji way connection to ballona creek. I could not get google to route straight on to that little bike path leg that connects to ballona, instead it routes you along Fiji st parallel to the bike path up to that boat landing area then it connects... Curious if it really does get through to the path...
To answer another question, I will be passing out route maps tonight with suggested regroup spots so people can clique up.

Pity Tang's was closed but that was the best hoobastank themed burrito I think I've ever had.

Sad i missed the ride last night. That crash from the century last week still has me out. Supposedly i have a hairline fracture and it might be another week or two. Congrats to all those who made it - and Rich who made it without us lol.
Unfortunately i think i cracked my carbon frame in the wreck. It is supposed to have lifetime warranty, but i bet they would turn me down in a heartbeat if i said the wrong thing. The bike itself has zero exterior damage except for the hairline crack that chipped some paint off b/c of the stress. Does anybody have experience getting the manufacturer to honor the original warranty? What do i say to them?
heres the damage

they'll be able to determine the cause of the failure, the failure in the tube like on the side is probably not going to get warrantied

Stuck on Mt. Disappointment, Part 2 or Why I will be abstaining from group rides or My Beef with the Wolfpack Hustle
12/29/2009
1 Comment(s)
Â
They say you should never go to bed angry. I suppose they also say you should never blog while you're mad. But I'm going to anyways. I have a beef with the Wolfpack Hustle, as friendly as they have been with me on Twitter, because they completely misrepresent themselves to the community as an open group ride with a "no rider left behind" Â mentality. I call shenanigans on that. Major shenanigans. This is from their site regarding the Wolfpack Hustle ride:
The Hustle Ride rolls out every Monday from Tang's Donut on Sunset and Fountain in Silverlake at 10pm.Â
The routes change up from week to week and cover wide swaths of territory. Riders that participate will experience a completely different Los Angeles than most trapped in their coffins will ever know. Distances range in length from 25-50 miles. We climb walls we break into shit we scuttle through hoods like rats on the run. The pack rolls as a group, there are no winners there are no losers. Understand: This is not a race. This is a HUSTLE.Â
If you aren't riding a fixed gear, track, or a geared road bike you will likely have a hard time keeping up. All are invited but not all will make it to the end. Unfortunately, sometimes riders DO get left behind and that's the madness that is Wolfpack. If you ride hard and complete enough rides you might even get a spoke card (that is unless we lagged again on making more.)Â
ALL ARE INVITED to ride with us but understand that YOUare your own rider. Leave the ego at home. Be safe. Don't get lost in someone's wheel. Be aware of traffic and road conditions at ALL TIMES and avoid risks that will endanger the Pack, yourself, other riders, or pedestrians and vehicles on the streets. We respect the reds, we respect the cops, we respect traffic, and we respect the sweat, the tears, and the blood that flows through our bodies. BE VOCAL about all hazzards and ever changing road conditions. Before you do anything read Bicycle Street Smarts to help prepare yourself.
Okay, so here's how it went down: I arrived at Tang's about 930pm, I was the first one there, and got myself some coffee to prep for the ride. About 15 minutes later, more riders were arriving, and I met Wayne, who I had communicated with a bit via Twitter, and he and I discussed the ride. At about 1010pm, one of the riders starts making the rounds telling everyone the first leg of the route. He comes up to Wayne and explains it to him, I don't really hear it all, and then the guy turns to me and instead of telling me the route, just tells me to follow Wayne. Okay, pause here.
This guys who's walking around telling the route is doing so like he's pissed off he even has to bother sharing such vital information with other riders. When he looks at me, the only woman there, he basically blows me off as if I don't deserve to know the route because it's my first time there and I'm the only woman. The directions are very vague, and all I really understand is that we're going to meet up in some park. Of course, there are like a thousand parks in LA, so that's not extremely useful information. So I'm already a little irritated that I don't know the route, and if I fall behind, then I'm done for. So much for the no rider left behind philosophy professed above. So much too for that bullshit about it not being about ego. In the few minutes when I actually interacted with that group, it was extremely clear that the guy who was supposed to be giving us the route directions was full of himself and his ego.Â
Then, completely out of nowhere, with no warning, two of the leaders start riding, people jump on their bikes and race up to catch them. So I jump on my bike, and now I'm already behind. Within a few blocks I'm in the back of the pack, then behind the pack, then the pack is gone. Since I don't know the route, I have no clue how to find the pack or catch up with them, so I'm screwed, as are a couple of kids who also got left behind. Now to be clear, I was only a block behind the group until I got stuck at a red light. That's when I lost them. On their website they say they respect reds. That's also a crock. If they respected the reds as I did, I would've been able to catch up.Â
So here's my final verdict: I have no problem being behind the pack or even left behind. I can handle myself on the streets of LA quite well, I do it all the time. Heck, I just finished my first century from LA to Oceanside completely unsupported and by myself. (Will update blog on that later--had to blog about this first.) But communicating with the Wolfpack leaders via Twitter, I understood that it was fast-paced but that it was a group ride and that the route was shared information at the beginning of the ride, not that the route was privileged information only given to a few spandexed-out ego freaks. I feel like I hit up against this issue whenever I ride with men. They want to be the only ones who know the route.Â
But why would you ENCOURAGE someone to come on a ride just to be so egotistically rude to them? Why would you encourage people to join the ride, but not share info on the ride with them when they do show up? There was nothing about that ride that was a hustle. It was flat out an egotistical race. I am not slow, and I have kept up with my fair share of fast male cyclists who don't slow down for amateurs like me.Â
So, Wolfpack, take down your post on Midnight Ridazz and edit your website so it's no longer advertised as an open group ride. That's a bunch of horse manure. You guys seem to just want to show off to each other how fast you can dust each other in shiny spandex, and only seem to welcome people who look like you and ride like you.Â
Wayne tried to encourage me to train and come back and dust them all. But I'm not about ego. I don't need to prove myself to anyone but me, and I did that on December 25th when I completed my first century, and I'll do it again this Friday when I improve my time on the century. I ride because I enjoy riding. I want to say I enjoy the cycling community as well, but lately my experiences with that community have been very negative. Critical Mass has been extremely negative, and I see unsupervised minors tagging buildings and riding on the wrong side of the road, and breaking other laws. And tonight, I expected to be with a slightly more mature crowd, and instead was surrounded by what was, from the get-go, clearly a group of men out to tout their egos. It's highly likely that I'm attributing the actions and attitude of one man to the entire group, but that was my experience, and, as I understand it, has been the experience of others. Â

Alright, let me clarify. I was ticked off when I wrote the post, as I mentioned, and I used the phrase "no rider left behind". That's not exactly true of the ride; however, saying that "sometimes" riders get left behind versus "always"- which I now understand after certain discussions-is extremely different. In addition, if it's a group ride, you intend to ride as a group, which also emphasized that you would start out as a group, not bolt out unexpectedly.

it was a typical wolfpack night. the only difference was that no leader yelled out rolling. Some of the faster riders just rolled off and the rest of us had to hustle to catch up to them. This is just a bunch of blog drama. Hayden was there and directions were given out within earshot of all sub groups as usual. Everyone was chatting and the mood was very friendly. The issue the blogger seems to have is the information about wolfpack hustle is not consistent with what you get at the ride. Well i think that just about every ride is going to be different from the propaganda written about it.
This blogger really has an axe to grind and is passing a whole bunch of judgment on others that she says was passed on her.

I think she is being a bit hypocritical.
I got dusted on my first 2 wolfpack rides, but I still had fun.
True, Roadblock was there to give me the route, but even so It was hard to memorize it in my head. So, when I lost the group at a red light I just gave up. No biggie, and no resentment. The fact that she might have been treated poorly because she is a woman really sucks though. We can't know this for certain. But otherwise, I just don't understand the redundant verbal attacks towards wolfpack about being "egotistical". Isn't a blog somewhat narcissistic in itself? You can't really base your impressions off of a ride for the first time. And also when Roadblock isn't even there. Just my thoughts.

Funny post but a true perspective of a nube's experience.
Wolfpack is how the name sounds, it's a survival of the fittest ride,
as you better bring your A game and pay attention or get dropped.
All hard core roadie rides are about ego, that is what pushes the pace.

onemanstrash is correct, nothing really aypical about the night. we waited at the first stop for what felt like a good ten minutes and saw no sign of lights on the river trail so we continued, nothing more nothing less. Was actually a pretty "chill" night compared to usual.

someone needs to report that pothole. I should have reported it myself after my own incident on it, but for some reason I figured it had already been reported and the city just didn't give a fuck. Has anyone reported a pothole before and actually seen it fixed?

Ok well, I have a pretty good picture of what happened. It's really harsh language. Everyone entitled to their opinion, but not to their own facts. Fact is you have to bring it on this ride. Thorn resistant tires, lights.... Doesn't say anywhere on our site about no rider left behind. You might get dropped. Whether it is "sometimes" or "always" is up to you. We just try to not be boisterous or boastful about it. We give you the onus.
I'm really bummed that she would try imply that women are looked down upon on our ride. Not true. We love the den mothers since day one. We worship She wolf Aka Beatriz. Worship her. She's not the fastest she just has the attitude and hustle that leads the group. We follow her. She doesn't ride much with us because of her rigorous racing schedule. She advanced beyond this ride but her spirit is all wolf.

Talk about slippery slope fallacies. Every conclusion that she drew was out of frustration/anger rather than sound rational thinking. All conclusions were from what we didn't say to her from her 45 mins of WPH rather than what we did say. I'm glad she met Wayne though. He is a really nice guy.

Last night was weird from jump street. We saw so many accidents and traffic was super unfriendly. Everything was kinda on edge early on.
We got to Tangs and did a warm up to the Observatory. Got back to Tangs at 9:50 and saw Wayne and the girl sitting there talking. No one really went over to interact with them and they never came over to the group. After reading the post so many things could have gone better. Wayne comes to WP inconsistantly so who knows what she was told of the ride. Wolfpack has morphed into a legit fast ride. It's a hustle not a social. Making the complete route is earned not given. But in her defense if she wasn't told how the ride really is, I can see why she was pissed. It was never about being a girl or guy. The problem she showed up on a night that no one paid any attention to first timers of WP. She showed up on a night that started with disfunction. Hayden didn't ride and Don didn't show up. Neither of them designated a leader. John stepped up and did a great job of getting a route set and the group rolling and staying organized at the stops. It sucks because every week there is a different start time. I don't know if that is based on the amount of weed that anyone shows up with or what, but it is inconsistant none the less. We have left at 10 and we have left at 10:45. It is something we have just gotten used to week after week. At 10:20 we decided to get the group rolling and slow rolled to Hillhurst and ramped up on the way over the hill to the bike path. Once on the bike path we killed it and regrouped at the Victory bridge as usual. If you didn't make it to that point in reality you shouldn't be riding Wolfpack. There are a ton of building block rides to hit. In my opinion WP is the pinnicle of the night group rides. If it was easy everyone would finish it. The fact is less than 50% of the riders that roll from Tangs make it back to Tangs at the end of the night. As far as the fixie vs geared bikes goes. The same guys are on the front no matter what bikes they ride. It is the rider not the bike. I would like to apologize to the girl for not coming over and introducing her to the group. That is probably the biggest issue with the whole post. She was not welcomed to the group. If we went over and told her - hi this is Wolfpack prepare for an ass whoopin' - and the ride went exactly the same, there wouldn't have been an issue. There are a number of people like iJunes who show up and hang out at Tangs but never finish or even do the ride. We get into our own world with our own agendas and sometimes there are casualities. Wolfpack is what it is, but I for one will make a point to make a conscious effort to seek out the new people on this ride from now on because of this.

First off, to clarify. I didn't personally know this young lady before 10p.m. Monday evening. And prior to that had interacted with her once on her twitter account, when I found out she was doing a Century ride, by herself.
So when I arrived she was sitting in Tangs having coffee. Me and another rider were talking and she introduced herself. said she was gonna ride. about 20 mins later all were assembled and the route was being given. She was trying to get clarification about the bike path location when everyone just bolted. You can blame me because as I was telling her to go past riverside and it's on the, I jumped on my bike and bolted in mid sentence and just yelled out. REGROUP AT THE BIKE PATH.
It was an all out mad dash for the few of us who didn't even know we were starting. Okay, so then we flew up Hazeltine and then turned at Los Feliz which is all down hill and nobody stopped at the bike path bridge. I got about half way down the 5 fwy and realized this girl had no clue where she was going. I went back, tried to find her and she was gone. I knew I wasn't gonna find the pack again so I just went home.
Somewhere along the lines, via twitter, she was given the impression that this is an "all ride together in harmony" group ride(something I found out at 2 in the morning, while defending the wolfpack). whoever gave her that impression was the reason for her blog. In her words: "If I'd known it was a race, I would'nt have chosen this ride".
I personally feel she didn't do her homework.
She feels like someone misrepresented the ride. Legit statement?

oh wow...
I wasn't there last night...but I am going to go ahead and say that the ride description sounds much more welcoming than the ride actually is. and I am all for taking the listing off Midnight Ridazz, although my reasons are much different from hers.
That said, on myy first Wolfpack, the ENTIRE GROUP waited for me, TWICE, to fix a shredded tire. They gave me cash money to use to patch it (thanks RICH!!) and even the man himself Tony Z rode to a CVS so he could duct tape that shit together so I could get home. and that took at least an hour out of the ride that night.
At the same time, I've thrown a chain and been dropped like a bag of dirt. So it goes.
Wolfpack is no joke. Seasoned racers lead this ride and I'm sorry but if you approach ANY group of MEN and don't expect a little ego to be thrown around, then...well, you just don't know men apparently. haha
I can see how she came to feel the way she did, but I tend to lean towards the fact that her feelings are unwarranted simply because she expected too much (or too little?) of Wolfpack.

Wolfpack is great. It made cycling really exciting for me as a sport and discipline of sorts. I don't want to be around a group of people who don't, at some point in their lives, put ego or pride on the line in a healthy fashion. My sense of it is that WP isn't a ride that is meant to coddle. If 99% of the riders feel suddenly 'oh I'm the shit wolfpack is easy' you did something wrong that night and didn't bring your best effort. People that really are the shit (and some people on this ride have quite the cycling resume) are always challenging people to do better than they think they can and keep the ride charging at a solid pace.
I've been dropped; I've prepared, shown up/finished and felt proud of myself. It is just how it goes. I'd ignore the blogger and their bad press. Though it is worthwhile to examine dissent, I don't think that this person's is too much to get worked up over.

Oh wow La Duderina. I totally remember that. That was my first Wolfpack as well. I remember your tire blowing up as you stopped for that gate at the bottom of the hill. My impression was that you had done the ride before for some reason.
Wolfpack is about pedaling hard and being addicted to it. I remember on that first Wolfpack ride I did finish but there was a group of guys that just zipped down the LA river bike bath after La Duderina's flat and I knew at that moment I was determined to eventually be able to hang with that pace. I love that challenge that we all provide each other and if you don't like that then Wolfpack probably isn't the place for any given rider. Sure that sounds like some sort of condescending or even egotistical statement but it's true. I have guy friends that are riding road that I haven't brought out yet b/c I don't think they are quite ready. It's hard.

rich is right, it was a weird evening. Don was away and Hayden was unable to ride (and really upset about it) Hayden tapped Richard and myself to do the route for the evening, and probably in our hastiness to have a somewhat timely start in the cold, I didn't do the greatest job of disseminating the route and making sure everyone understood it. I also realized later in the ride that I didn't seek out the first timers and give them the rundown of how it goes, as Don has been doing. What can i say, those are some mighty big shoes to fill and they've been doing it every week for over 4 years.
my apologies if I didn't do a good job of it, especially if it was somehow taken for being egotistical.

I see some stupid, stupid riding on Monday nights is all. Not only is it stupid, but it can be downright rude to motorists, not all of whom are kind, patient human beings. I'm just trying to address the group as a whole to ride smarter and safer. Each and every one of us should always keep in mind that between us and a vehicle, we will always lose.

I had a dream last night of the All City Race 4. There where more than 40 groups participating and the parking lot at Tangs Donuts was filled with fixed gears and road bikes. But at the beginning of the race Roadblock announced that the race was from Tangs to Long Beach and the race didn't depend on the riders speed but if he had the endurance to actually make it. Funny thing tho at the finish line my dream ended and I couldn't see the results....

I made it a few blocks past the 16-mile mark, and turned around because i didn't want to get dropped/lost/burnt out any further south, and the distance between me & the pack was growing as I got caught at 3 red lights in a row where the large intersections were. It was a great experience and I'll be back for certain. Everyone was really encouraging too, which was good cuz i was anxious as hell. This might or might not have been mentioned before, but WPH seems to be one of the only rides that has occurred on its regularly scheduled time for 4 straight years.
By this, I mean that while many other rides, slow and fast, have either been scuttled by their creators, or took on a low-key approach, WPH is the only ride that manages to weather the storm of negativity.
Even though I've never done it, I expect this ride will still be around in another four years.

damn, Wolfpack, it was better than I remember it.
SPECIAL THANKS to the homie in the dark-colored SUV with the nice bike rack and NINER stickers for pulling me back up to the pack - without you, my ride home would have been pretty lonely. You were truly an angel sent by the bike gods and I hope we meet again.

Just something funny I noticed...
Exactly a year ago, we rode to the Hollywood sign. That ride was my return ride after being in Argentina. 2 return rides the same week, a year apart. trippy shit, man.

no sweat man I was trying everyone I could think of in the area. Alex came out and rescued us via twitter. Shit that was scary. Gus flew down a steep slope about 100 feet down... I remembered what happened years back with Rebecca and totally didnt want to move him... but he didn't want to have an ambulance come out cause of the expense. Eventually Gus was able to get up and be helped back to the street level.

FYI If you ever need an ambulance or medics again. The City of Los Angeles is forgiving with their $614 - $1046 bills. You just have to call them when you get the bill and claim poverty. They might want a letter and some proof like a tax return or something. The county is probably the same way, yet I never dealt with them accept their hospitals and the hospitals are very forgiving.
Same with most hospital E.R cost. It just some letters and documentation, pay stubs, banks statements, etc. They usually let the bills go. Some have special funds, some use state tobacco tax revenue to offset the cost.

you have to fully specify the URL, including the scheme (http://) or the browser assumes it to be a relative path (that is, relative to the current URL)
on boards where you don't have to include the scheme, it only works because that board has special software that cleans up for your filthy html for you.

He didn't make it to La Habra, but he might have made it to Knott's Berry Farm! Unfortunately some of the B-group made a right turn where they should have turned left and ended up way off course. But the dude's still got that big bottom, big top.
