Thread Box:
NY fixed gear bikers?
Thread started by Stryker at 08.12.09 - 2:52 pm

I'm gonna move to Queens, NY and will stay for about a year.
Does anyone knows that there're fixed gear bikers or any website like midnight ridazz?
I'm taking my bike with me there but none of my friends ride bicycle.
Please let me know~

reply

there is no scene like midnight ridazz anywhere but on the west coast.
you can check out nyfixed.com but you need an invite code, and i dont think they give them out anymore.

just make sure to make your bike look like shit and be prepared to buy at least 2 u-locks and know how to use them properly. if you think LA bike thievery is bad, just wait till you get to NY and see huffys with missing seats locked up with fuggedabout it chains.

if you dont understand my question, get the fuck off.
All I needed was just little info.
One day, some one will steal or fuck up you bike(im not sure if u have one tho),
and will see what you're gonna say about that.

Seriously, get a life loser.

i lived in new york for 10 years. as far as i know, there are not any regular group rides besides critical mass (which is too confrontational in nyc, IMO) there are also roadie rides on the weekends in central park, prospect park, etc. and there are a fair share of people riding fixed on those rides. there are definitely events and alleycats and polo, so those might be a good way to meet other riders, i was more of a utilitarian cyclist when i was there, but there's not any calendar/social network/website of rides every day of the week like there is out here.

even though the advice might be unsolicited, sciencefriction isn't necessarily wrong.

get a kryptonite chain, or a ulock, or 2 ulocks, but whatever you get, just know that if you leave it locked up outside (or inside) one day it might go missing, so prepare yourself.

i once read something along the lines of "it's not your bike, you just get to ride it for awhile"

you might want to check out this site for bike events in NYC

http://www.bikeblognyc.com/

there are tons of little group rides all over the city but it's usually just a group of friends. riding a bike there is not like riding a bike in LA because generally New Yorkers don't rely on cars so much. in LA, if you do anything without your car it's considered a revolutionary act.

I'm moving back to New york in a few weeks, most likely in Brooklyn. I'd kinda like to find a ride out there or more people to ride with. bikeblognyc is the only site I know of that sorta applies but I don't think NY has its shit together as far as organize ride websites.

New York is the only state in which the optional insurance plans that accompany most bicycle locks do not apply. I think the big chains are the only ones that bicycle lock companies will insure in NY. ha ha. East Coast Baby

those lock insurance deals are a joke anyway, because they require that you show the lock and how it was broken. But in New York, they always steal the chains, because they can resell them.

omg I know...With the chains (or any other bike lock I think) you can't get any money if the thief used a power tool to break the lock. Because you basically need a power tool to get through one of those things, there's no point in even buying the damn insurance.

Critical Mass is worth going to, I met a bunch of cool people there who love to ride. It is confrontational, and there is a ton of police presence (your own police escort of over a dozen scooters).

There is a large "moonlight ride" that goes on in Central Park once a month.

Alleycats and bike polo is a good bet. I haven't done either in NY.

I don't think NY is conducive to large group rides like MR because of the police. They are very aggressive, numerous (especially post-9/11, I feel like I'm in a police state whenever I visit now), and quick to respond.

I go to NY quite a bit. For group rides I hit up these sites (http://transalt.org http://times-up.org/index.php )

As far as locks and bike theft. Try to keep an eye on it and remove anything easy to remove. Try to lock it up it is highly visible. And be smart and awareof your surroundings.

I have only had 1 thing stoles from my bike and it was my "I Bike LA" spoke card HERE at UCLA!

HEre is my bike locked up in the East Village. It was there 6 hours later after a rooftop cookout!

Dont live in fear. Dont FLOSS either!
