equipped with wooden rims, José Meiffret set a world motor-paced speed record of 204.73 km/h (127mph) behind a Mercedes-Benz 300SL on the German Autobahn on July 16, 1962.

Yeah... that fork is a "negative trail" setup and minimizes the chance of speed wobbles. Ever had that happen on a skateboard, only to find that more weight on the front stops it?

In his pocket, Meiffret carried a note:
"In case of fatal accident, I beg of the spectators not to feel sorry for me. I am a poor man, an orphan since the age of eleven, and I have suffered much. Death holds no terror for me. This record attempt is my way of expressing myself. If the doctors can do no more for me, please bury me by the side of the road where I have fallen."

This made my day. .. . At the Bike Oven in the restroom lies one of my favorite Schwin Posters of random Bike evolution within the company..... blah blah blah...
previous holder was French Racer Alfred Letourner; Drafting a race car, he set the speed at 108.92 mph on a Paramount bicycle with 255 gear inches....
again... fucking bad-ass thread....
