we will be in LA august 21,
but,
the company we work for put us up at Holiday in LAX.
can anyone host a couple of the riders, aug 21 and 22, so we don't have to stay near LAX or bike back there late at night?

Man free vodka sounds pretty good today. I might just get there early and get a start on everyone! Hopes it free as in free you can drink as much as you want, as opposed to free and that's all you get!

Free Vodka was/is great...
Im so glad everyone cleansed themselves of that Banana Republic impurity, and co-signed this company... If only BR gave away clothes... they'd win us over too.
Is this company supposed to be some kind of rider run company or something or why does Nike get shit for their promotions?
Just curious (and joking above)... the guy tried to explain a little about the company, but I just kind of nodded because it was soooo fucking hot and I could tell he wanted to go outside... what was their deal? Just another vodka brand?

Ummm they paid for riders to ride across the country, camping and staying in hotels. That's waaay better than free clothes. Not sure what it has to do with Vodka, but thats why they are cool. Plus I think the beef isnt really with BR but Kuang Lee, at least in my eyes.

Pretty much. It's a New Zealand vodka that's now a "hip and edgy" subsidiary of Bacardi. - http://www.42below.com/pressrelease/
This guerilla marketing campaign appears to have been hugely successful, even if the wikipedia entry might make some of the more leftist MR members think twice about buying Bacardi products - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacardi
Bacardi family members had close ties to the US political elite, as well as organizations of state such as the CIA. The family funded various Cuban exile organizations such as CANF.
Embittered Bacardi helmsman Jose Pepin Bosch bought a surplus B-26 bomber with the hopes of bombing Cuban oil refineries (the bold plan was foiled when a picture of the bomber appeared on the front page of The New York Times). He was also allegedly involved in the CIA plot to assassinate Fidel Castro; documents uncovered during Congressional investigations into John F. Kennedy's death bring to light a message outlining how he had plans to assassinate Castro, his brother (Raúl Castro) and Che Guevara. The RECE (Cuban Representation in Exile) also receives funding from Bacardi family members.
More recently, Bacardi lawyers were influential in the drafting of the 1996 Helms-Burton Act which sought to extend the scope of the United States embargo against Cuba.[10] In 1999 Otto Reich, a lobbyist in Washington on behalf of Bacardi Rum, drafted section 211 of the 1999 Omnibus appropriations act, a bill that became known as the Bacardi Act. Section 211 denied trademark protection to Cuban businesses products expropriated after the Cuban revolution, a provision keenly sought by the Bacardi family. The act was aimed primarily at Havana Club brand in America, which had been registered by the Cuban government.[11] Section 211 has been challenged un-successfully by the Cuban government and the European Union in US courts; however, the act has been ruled illegal by the WTO (August 2001). The U.S. Congress has yet to re-examine the matter.

Yeah... I was joking about the comparison. I know about the Kaung Lee stuff..
So basically they're probably just putting some money into marketing their brand through cycling (in general)? They're not rider owned or anything like that? I looks like they have a team, or were those just riders sponsored for the overall event?
just curious... i felt bad drinking all that Smirnoff before I walked into Sunset Junction.

I believe the idea is that they would like to be the vodka of choice for cyclists.
If you have time to read a little, each of the riders blogged about spending two months riding their bike across America. I think that was part of the deal.

I disliked how much emphasis there was on the whole "free vodka" campaign. Is that what it takes to get riders to come out to events nowadays? Am I that out of touch?
And I'm well aware of what they did for the 42 riders who travelled across the country on their bikes so please refrain to inform me again... it still just feels funny... "like when we used to climb the rope in gym class."

I'm not saying anyone "should" care about anything (other than being a safe, courteous, and respectful cyclist), but being informed is never a bad idea.
I'm no fan of Castro myself, but if you're one of the anti-imperialist / viva la revolucion types, being part of Bacardi's marketing efforts might prove embarrassing.

On that note... i think people should care about a few more things... but Im an idealist.
Thanks for the reply though... I was just curious, I wasnt expecting the whole sub company thing, just the event thing, which others answered..(not to take away from your reply).... youre right people should be informed and intoxicated.
