LA Explorers Club: The Dawn of Downtown
July 20th, 2014
(Downtown, Los Angeles, CA)
New Belgium Brewing Company, urban enthusiasts, C.I.C.L.E. and historians have teamed up to launch the first of the Los Angeles
Explorers Club bike rides.
What is the Los Angeles Explores Club?
Have you ever seen a hillside staircase to nowhere? Or, rail tracks that start and end with no rhyme nor reason? Maybe a faded, hand
painted sign chipping away beneath flashy billboards? Tunnels. Towers. You've seen it. You've seen the same things we've seen. There
are still so many clues into the Golden life that this great city offered its patrons. Why was it built? Where does it lead? Why is it still there,
hanging on? What else is out there? Grab your bicycle. Come with us, let's go exploring!
The Los Angeles Explorers Club is a band of curious, urban adventurers in search of the secret places, treasures, stories and legends in
our city. And we do this on bikes. Guest curators thoughtfully plan our rides around different themes and neighborhoods. Visit
www.laexplorersclub.com for more information.
Date: July 20th, 2014
Explore the origins of Los Angeles in downtown, from trains to streetcars, speakeasies, and industry. Things have changed 100 fold since
the dawn of downtown, but we'll take you back to that time.
Registration: Must be 21 or over. $10 registration includes a fully curated bike tour with 2 complimentary New Belgium Beers and a limited
edition LA Explorers Club patch and the ever-important Wes Anderson style #2 pencil. Pre registration:
www.laexplorersclub.com/downtown-los-angeles. You can also register the day of the event at Artisan House. Explorer registration fees
help support C.I.C.L.E.'s bicycle advocacy efforts!
Time: Meet at 3pm.
Meeting Location: The ride gathers at Artisan House in Downtown LA (600 S. Main Street, LA 90014) for some registration-mingle-beer
thirty business before we pedal off to start the ride. We’ll make a handful of cool stops and hear stories about old Downtown LA as it was
building its way into the history books. We’ll end the ride at Villains Tavern (1356 Palmetto Street, LA 90013 ) around 6:30pm for some
music, beers and fun. All riders must be 21 years or older.
Getting there: The starting point is 1 mile from the Metro Red Line Pershing Square Station. If you need to drive to the ride, there are 3
public pay-parking concrete lots on the corner of Main Street and 6th Street directly adjacent to Artisan House, our starting location.
Skill Level: Intermediate and up.
Length of Ride: Less than 10 miles.
What to Bring: Bike in good working order, your ID, lock, night riding lights, and water.
