The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #257 - Because It's There

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.
It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
but often it is not possible.
On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0
Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:
Because It's There
Okay, naming this week's ride after George Mallory's famous quip when asked
why he wanted to climb Everest is probably a bit misleading. We've certainly
gone higher, done steeper, longer climbs, have had more off-roading, and
followed routes which required more hiking. There is nothing particularly
superlative about the ride at all per se. But it does have a combination of all
these things that while not unprecedented is nonetheless not usual -- except
inasmuch as we usually endeavor to try different things.
This week we're trying this.
Not because the route is necessarily convenient for cycling but because it is there.
(Under twenty miles; a good deal of climbing and off-roading, including off-road
climbing that will no doubt actually be hiking; you'll probably be happiest with a bike
with lower gearing and wider tires; you'll probably be pretty unhappy if you bring
a fixed gear bike or clipless shoes (We did mention the hiking, right? It's no joke);
possibly one fence that is tricky to get around; we will, however, definitely fare
better than Mallory himself did)
