Phillip O'Neill Commemorative Walk/Ride

06.15.14

Sunday

START TIME: 7:30pm

Hello Ridazz~

I haven't been around here much since leaving the country to ride other parts of the world in 2008. I am back in town and reaching out to the community that got me started on bikes, with an invite to a walk/ride.

Last year, my younger brother Phillip, was struck from behind by a careless driver in Pasadena. Phillip, even at 25 had already achieved a tremendous amount, physically with his hands, and intrinsically with his heart and mind. Though he wasn't a regular cyclist, I've always felt that anytime someone saddled up, they become members of the community. The consequences we all risk (though largely out of our control) is also a tragedy shared by all on some level. In response to the ripples of last year, the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition has organized a walk/ride that will end with a small vigil at Grant Park. With it, I see the beginning transference of my brothers death, from tragedy, to a vehicle that can help continue to effect positive change. Maybe even further motivate or inspire those of us who have experienced the freedom of the pedal, and help lever the balance sheet to a safer and more sustainable future for cyclist and motorist alike.

I know it's fathers day (blame the driver), but I humbly invite you all to join my family and I, physically or spiritually, as we all reflect and share. While I can no longer ride, I will be there walking my bike and I hope to be joined by many others, mounted or alighted. I began riding because of the rides here. The en masse of bikes, thoughtful and positive attitudes and crazy memories were an example I saw one midnight and had to be apart of. While my brothers death is a sadness beyond imagination, it's still an opportunity to express that example of collaboration and collectivism that riding a bike naturally fosters. Plus I love seeing people riding their personalities around!

Ride starts at 7:30 at Pasadena City Hall (100 N. Garfield Ave. 91101)

Walk starts at 7:30 at Grant Park (232 S. Michigan Ave. 91106)

Vigil start at 8:00 also at Grant Park

Thank you~~
