The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #196 - Throne Games
04.24.13
One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.
It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).
On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0
Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:
Throne Games
Everybody on the internet these days is talking about some new game show
on HBO. Haven't seen it, ourselves, so we can't really comment on whether this
ride has anything to do with it. We were going to call the ride "Myst," but the results
from the focus group were that this was too old of a cultural reference. "The kids
won't get it," they said. "Try something more current," they said. "How about Game
of Thrones?" they said.
And what did we say? We said, "Sure!" Because we're nothing if not accommodating.
We want to, ya know, RELATE. We're DOWN. Totally. (And, don't worry, we're not
going to give away any Dumbledore spoilers.)
Now, granted, we still think we were onto something with the Myst thing. No obvious
goals, objectives, nor enemies -- just exploration? Sounds about right. But we're
sure there are Throne Game parallels that can be made as well. The ride is like
a game, our bikes like our thrones. Sure. See: 100% legitimate theme! Not at all
crass pandering!
Kittens! Pizza!
We'll be taking the red line again this week, leaving the donut shop at
9pm SHARP. Bring yer TAP. Or, if you prefer, meet us at N. Hollywood at 9:30.
(A little over 30 post-Metro miles; a big hill; please note: no actual kittens nor pizzas are planned)
