Storm The Bastille!
12.4.07
Tuesday
START TIME: 5:30 pm
The LADOT, the DWP, Rec & Park(ing) and Councilmember Tom LaBonge have once again overruled State Law declaring the Griffith Park Festival of Lights to be BICYCLE FREE.
Kim Hughes of the DWP explained that “the LADOT traffic consultants felt that the significant automobile traffic for the Festival of Lights made it dangerous for cyclists on Crystal Springs Drive so there will be NO bicycles allowed during the Festival except for the Bike Night preview on November 18th.”
While access to the Festival of Lights might not be a significant transportation issue to most, allowing the LADOT to address gridlock by removing cyclists from the mix is a serious issue that must not slide by without a loud and prohibitive response from the cycling community.
This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that we hear “We’re doing it for your own good!” as an explanation for another restriction on cycling access on public streets.
Just today the City Council’s Transportation Committee is reviewing congestion relief proposals for the Pico & Olympic Corridors. How close are we to solutions that call for moving more automobiles faster and at the expense of our access to the streets of LA?
In this context we must not allow the City of Los Angeles to establish a precedent by denying cyclists access to the streets of LA under the pretense that “it’s safer for the cyclists!”
Join us at the Los Angeles Bicycle Advisory Committee’s December meeting as we urge our representatives to…ah…REPRESENT!
Tacos on 2nd Street afterwards!
If you can’t make the ride, join us at the meeting:
