Spoke(n) Art Ride - Transient Lanscape: views on Los Angeles

12.8.07

Saturday

START TIME: 6:30 PM

The Spoke(n) Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles. The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart's "Gallery Night".

This month's Spoke(n) Art Ride is brought to you by "The Transient Landscape" - a photographic exhibition at the Bike Oven that will be up until the end of December. The exhibition will have its opening on the same night that the Spoke(n) Art Ride takes place.

The Ride:

The Spoke(n) Art Ride will begin (as it usually does), at the flagpole on the corner of Figueroa and York Blvd. in Highland Park.

We will leave at 6:30 p.m. for a mellow ride to about 7 or 8 different galleries open for NELA Art's Second Saturday.

No cover charges, no waivers, just bring a functioning bike (and some blinky lights).

The ride will end at the Bike Oven & Sandpaper Books at 3706 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065 - where an art opening will be in full swing.

The Art Opening:

The Transient Landscape: views on Los Angeles examines the idea of a contemporary photographic city landscape taken via four different perspectives. Each unique viewpoint brings into play the idea that no one glamorized or degraded version of Los Angeles can ever exist regardless of how infamous the city has become throughout the years. As the second largest city in the country, the center of constant celebrity exhibition, constant cultural flux, and home of the television & motion picture industry, Los Angeles is often viewed as a beacon of hope, opportunity and salvage. It is a city that has grown through the romanticized belief that for many, it will be the one place that will make life a bit less mundane.

In this group show, artists Angelica Robles, Keila Lopez, Michelle Owen and Natasha Krakowiak come in with different approaches for the city’s landscape. One becomes a historical study in architectural style found throughout the city; a style which continues to evolve but also, at times, remains beautifully stagnant. One is a view from a person coming in as an outsider and finding disappointment. Another examining the city’s solitude through vacant urban landscapes, empty public squares and as a city that has been paved over. And the last a study of suburban areas surrounding the greater city; suburban areas that create a secondary LA landscape many often forget or overlook. Each view demonstrates how transitory, impermanent and temporary a space like Los Angeles can be. All showing that what can one minute be gritty and isolated in the next can be immaculate and hopeful.

The exhibition opens on December 8th and will remain on view until December 30th. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, December 8th from 7pm – 12am.
