Bad Idea Ride: Atlantic to the Pacific

Saturday (Late at night on Friday. So late, in fact, that it will be Saturday--but it will still feel like Friday)




START TIME: 12:15 AM (on Saturday morning, not on Friday morning)








We will meet at the upper (street) level of the

Lake Gold Line Station and we will leave after the

last Gold Line Train arrives (at 12:15 AM Saturday

Morning). If you find your self running late,

please give me a ring, and we'll make

arrangements.



This 65 mile jaunt will begin at the Lake Gold

Line Station in Pasadena and end at the

Aviation/I-105 Green Line Station in El Segundo.



We’ll be diving into one of Chris Nelson’s clever

concept r-ideas: the notion of taking a road named

‘Atlantic’ all the way to the Pacific Ocean. We

will be riding in spirit with Chris and Katura,

who will likely be in Big Sur, heading our way

from Seattle.



We will meet at the upper (street) level of the

Lake Gold Line Station and we will leave after the

last Gold Line Train arrives (at 12:15 AM Saturday

Morning). If you find your self running late,

please give me a ring, and we'll make

arrangements.



We'll float downhill to the headwaters of Atlantic

Boulevard at Huntington Boulevard, then continue

South, through Alhambra, Monterey Park, East Los

Angeles, Commerce, Vernon, Maywood –at which point

Atlantic Boulevard will inexplicably turn into

Atlantic Avenue for the rest of our trip—Bell,

Cudahy, South Gate, Lynwood, Compton, and Long

Beach We’ll get to the ocean—or Ocean Boulevard,

at least—at approximately Mile #29.



In Long Beach we’ll have a chance to bail out or

revise our route, depending on time and group

interests. Downtown Long Beach has return Blue

line trains beginning at 5AM.



We’ll continue up the coast through San Pedro and

the Palos Verdes communities, through Redondo,

Hermosa, and Manhattan Beaches, until we get to

the Green Line station at Aviation and I-105 in El

Segundo.



There will be hills to climb in Monterey Park and

in Palos Verdes. There will be dark places,

especially in Palos Verdes, so bring a good light

and spare batteries. There will be poor road

conditions, especially within the heavily

truck-impacted Gateway Cities along our route, and

also in a continuous landslide zone in Palos

Verdes.



BAD BAD BAD! BAD IDEA RIDE! BAD!



Things to consider:



This ride includes a return on a Metro train:

Bring a minimum of $1.25 per segment of your

return trip or a valid pass of some sort. for your

ticket from San Bernardino to LA Union Station.



>We won't try to drop anyone, but this is

specifically NOT a "no riders left behind" ride.

Bring a bike in good working order, spare tubes &

pump, bus fare (slim pickins at 4 am), & anything

else you'd want in the middle of a strangely

vacant city in the middle of the night. Don't come

out if you're not willing to be on your own.



>Other obvious things to bring: Lights & spare

batteries. Water. Maybe anti-inflammatories. A

layer or two. Money for snacks. ID. Maps wouldn't

hurt. A bit more water. A camera. A friend who'll

hang out with you if you get stranded. Common

sense, self-sufficiency, & responsibility for your

own actions.

It'll be

the primary co-ordination number for the ride. If

you can, it's really a good idea to bring a map

with the route drawn in-- see directions below.

I'll provide minimal direction sheets, but they

won't show surrounding streets and escape routes.



>Bathroom opportunities will be few and far

between.
