The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #148 - Cravat Emptor

05.9.12

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Cravat Emptor

Okay, okay. We know our pun doesn't make sense. Emptor means "buyer."
It's caveat that means "beware." So we want it to be something like "beware
of neckwear," but that would be something entirely less punny in Latin.
More a confusing half-rhyme than a pun. And probably still not make any
sense (is the tie supposed to beware?). So, okay, the route name is something
about buying a tie. ...Which, at times, can be frustrating? ...Like perhaps
the route? So... Maybe we're onto something?

Or maybe not.

Either way, this week's ride is vaguely neckwear-related. No more or less
vague than any of our other themes, really. You'll see. And maybe you want to
don your favorite tie? Or cravat. Or kerchief.

Or maybe not.

But what you will definitely do is a bunch of off-roading. And hills. And some
off-road hills that we'll all probably have to walk. And one off-road hill that we
will barely be able to even walk. Though that is actually, technically a road.
Los Angeles is like that. And so is this route. It'll be fun!

Not much distance though.

+ A shout-out should be given to Dan Koeppel of the Big Parade, as a significant
portion (the interesting portion) of this route is loosely based on a walk he led.

++ This is timely because his big event of the year, said Big Parade, is
happening in just over a week, on the 19th and 20th of May. For more
information, visit bigparadela.com

+++ Also want to give advance warning that there will be NO RIDE ON MAY 30TH.
In its place, some of us from the ride will be going to the screening of Paper Moon
that evening as part of the Last Remaining Seats program of the LA Conservancy.
This is generally a Wednesday-night event, so usually we have to skip it, but
we REALLY want to go see the Los Angeles Theatre finally (though Nathan is
still going to miss it since he will have departed for SF for ALC so, yeah, I am
basically just speaking for myself, Sean, here). We're not doing a ride to the
movie or anything, but it appears tickets are still available, so if you want to join
us there, visit laconservancy.org

++++ Speaking of Nathan and ALC, have you donated to his fund yet? AIDS
LifeCycle is really great cause and they could really use your support. If you want
to help out, visit tofighthiv.org
