Ride Highlights

At the Armory Center for the Arts

New Images of Identity

Exploration of racial identity in work by artists of color has proliferated over the last fifteen years. A number of these artists recognized or were part of the increase in immigration to the United States that began in the 1970s. Their presence and participation in this country enriched mass media and advertising with a broadened sense of representation.

This exhibition includes work by Laylah Ali, Iona Rozeal Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Dihn Q. Le, Yoshua Okon, Lezley Saar, John Trevino, and Kara Walker. Their art often unites imagery from diverse cultures in a single piece. A growing number of artists of color recognize and celebrate more than one heritage, acknowledging multiple ancestors from different parts of the world, as well as Caucasian forebears, or Western heritage influences. Their art has literally transformed the artistic dialogue, exploring a changing and challenging perception of our humanity, to create new images of identity. This exhibition is part of Skin: Art & Ideas 2007, a festival of the arts, sciences, and humanities in Pasadena and surrounding communities.

Art at Castle Green

Light Bringer Project presents an exciting evening of art at the historic Castle Green. Works by well-known Pasadena artists and photographers will be on display, including Kenton Nelson, Dan Douke, Magnus Stark, Phyllis Grazine, Kathleen O'Sullivan, among others. A photo tribute will be made to acclaimed African-American artist Charles White. Charles once used the Castle bridge as his painting studio. There will also be live drawing of artists' models in Victorian tableau, and the art of Girls Drawing Girls (GDG), a collective of women animators and illustrators. Books available for sale. No host bar and food.

At Pasadena City College

The Soldier's Skin: An Endless Edition

Presented as part of SKIN: Art & Ideas 2007.

Also, live musical performances by faculty and students of the Performance and Communications Arts Division and a video installation by Alexander Kritselis about the "Multiple Faces of Humanity" that fills all thirty-two windows of the main Administration building, facing Colorado Boulevard.
