The Bad Idea Ride: Four County Seats

Good idea: Go on the Lebowski ride, get home by 3:30 AM, and have a great weekend.



Bad idea:



How big is LA?



You may consider it to be only the strictest delineation of city boundaries, or some nebulous region defined vaguely by NAFTA-induced commerce.



Here's one angle: Counties. One definition of LA is a census-based "Five-County Metropolitan Statistical Region" which includes portions of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties. We'll be dropping Ventura without a logical explanation and we'll be 'cheating' a little bit to bring you four county seats in 80 miles.



Meet at Long Beach Transit Mall Blue Line Station (the Southern Terminus of the Blue Line). A train is scheduled to arrive at 11:59PM, and another at 12:19AM. We'll gather between those two arrival times and leave promptly after the 12:19 train arrives.



We'll hit the civic centers of the counties in our region. Santa Ana, Riverside, San Bernardino, and after a ride on Metrolink, Los Angeles. Normally somewhat boring, these civic centers will shine under the pink sky and weak moonlight of the Southland. We will be seeing them as they were designed to be seen--without people.



Here's a brief description of the route:

-Start at Long Beach Transit Mall. Head due East to Santa Ana (County Seat #1),

-use the Santa Ana River Trail through Anaheim Canyon and the Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor--lights will come in handy here--and take bike streets to head through Corona to Riverside (County Seat #2),

-rejoin the Santa Ana River Trail and some bumpy streets to get to San Bernardino (County Seat #3), and finally

-take the Metrolink to Downtown LA Union Station (County Seat #4).

Things to consider:



>This ride includes a return on a metrolink train: Bring $7.50 for your ticket from San Bernardino to LA Union Station. Also, if this ride has more than 10 people on it, prepare for delays or problems caused by the number of bikes on the train. Some people may need to take a later train--which means a delay of approximately two hours. Prepare to go out for breakfast and enjoy your morning in San Bernardino if this happens.





>We won't try to drop anyone, but this is specifically NOT a "no riders left behind" ride. Bring a bike in good working order, spare tubes & pump, bus fare (slim pickins at 4 am), & anything else you'd want in the middle of a strange city in the middle of the night. Don't come out if you're not willing to be on your own.



>Other obvious things to bring: Lights & spare batteries. Water. Probably anti-inflammatories. A layer or two. Money for doughnuts. ID. Maps wouldn't hurt. A bit more water. A camera. A friend who'll hang out with you if you get stranded. Common sense, self-sufficiency, & responsibility for your own actions.



>Bring a copy of my cell phone number. It'll be the primary coordination number for the ride. If you can, it's really a good idea to bring a regional map with the route drawn in--at least the basics of the route. I'll provide direction sheets, but they won't show surrounding streets and escape routes.



>Bathroom opportunities will be few and far between. The first Metrolink returning from San Bernardino to LA Union Station is at 7:10 AM-- we may miss this train, the next ones are at 8:45, then 11:00 AM. The train takes an hour and a half to get to LA Union Station... Regardless of what train we make, the sun will be high in the sky by the time you get back to LA. This is a long ride.



>There are real dangers to this ride. Come along at your own risk.
