Ride In Movie/Ride To The Rooftop
08.7.07
We start at the Bike Oven (130 W Avenue 42, across Figueroa) at 8:00, leave ON TIME at 8:30, and bike to 1830 Sunset Blvd, in Echo
Park. We can park our bikes inside the building, then, enjoy a nightime, rooftop screening.
This week's movie is, Jeannie Livingston's wonderfully funny and trippy, "Paris Is Burning".
Here is an exceprt from Slant Magazine on the movie. "...celebrated snapshot of the late-'80s New York drag-ball scene, such terms as
"beauty" and "reality" become loose mercury, blurred like the identities of the black and Hispanic gay men hitting the drag houses every
night. The documentary, a hit back when distributor Miramax had some kind of edge, is right away upfront about the racial, social, and
sexual politics of tucking in cocks and putting on dresses—"You're black, you're male, and you're gay," one queen says early on,
recounting the three-strikes-you're-out fringe status pressed on him since birth. The world of flaming, cross-dressing theatre, then, can
stand for an enclosed universe not just of communal acceptance, but also of mockery of the gender-rigidity of "normal" society (Schoolgirl,
Butch Queen, and Town and Country are a few of the categories in a beauty-pageant burlesque).
Admission to the rooftop is $2.00. Bring your own beer, wine, food...or they have $1 beer and wine for sale there. Bring a sweatshirt or a
blanket as it does get chilly.
Those who don't want to bike can always meet us at the screening. Doors open at 8:30pm, movie starts at 9 (although it usually starts
closer to 9:30). For those who haven't been to this yet, this is a great set up organized by some very cool people. This is definitely
catching on and is more crowded every week, so catch it while it's still new.
