The First EVER Catalina Island Critical Mass!!!
07.23.10
Have you ever looked far into the horizon and noticed a faint, faraway land? Ever wanted to know what it's like to ride the trails and experience a CLEAR starry night? Tired of the LA grind?
THEN THIS EVENT IS FOR YOU!!!!!!!
I am organizing the first ever Catalina Island Critical Mass! It's going to be a two day event that includes a night of camping underneath the stars. It'll be the weekend after the 4th of July, so everyone can recover from the fireworks and booze that entails our country's independence.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS WILL NOT BE A FREE EVENT :( BUT GETTING TO CATALINA ISN'T CHEAP.
The price hasn't been finalized yet but expect to contribute around 25-40 bucks a person, which is a lot cheaper than the 85 buck round trip ticket on the Catalina Express, not to mention the 9 dollar bicycle surcharge. It will all depend on the amount of people showing up for the ride. I happen to work in MDR and for a company that actually has a boat capable of doing these trips. The max capacity is 250, but to take our bikes and all the other stuff, I'll probably cut the capacity of at 125. If you want to see the boat go to http://www.hornblower.com/hce/port/yacht/mdr+24/gallery and you'll get the idea.
What to Bring:
1. Yourself :)
2. Your bike, preferably a mountain or all terrain bike. Fixies on dirt and gravel paths aren't really a great idea.
3. Camping Gear
a. Tent if you want it
b. sleeping bag definitly
c. bag or panniers to carry your stuff in
d. light
e. something to stash your food in.
4. Speaking of food, a grill would really be nice.
5. Booze! Um, just no drinking while we're on the boat.
6. Um, food.
7. Cigarettes
8. A camera
What not to bring:
1. Drugs. I know tht sucks but you will be subject to search upon boarding and since the boat falls under federal regulations, no medical card will save you.
2. Drugs. Just reitrating.
3. A pissy attitude.
4. Sea Sickness. That's a mess to clean up.
I think thaty pretty much covers it.
The ride to Marina Del Rey will leave from Bikerowave at 7am that day. I'll try to see if we can have a small brunch buffet, but if we can't, there will be a 2 hour stop at IHOP on Lincoln and Jefferson Blvd. It's 24 hours and I believe they have vegan options, or at least vegetarian. The boat would be boarding at 10am, leaving at 11am and arriving around 2pm in Avalon harbor. From there we'd do a ride to Little Harbor for the night. It's a pretty epic ride, lots of changing elevation. But it'll be gorgeous. We'll camp out there so anyone with a good source of music please bring it along. In the morning it'll be a northernly ride to Isthmus Cove in Two Harbors. We might get to see some buffalo, and maybe even a wild horse or two. The boat back from Two Harbors will leave the dock around 9pm, so we have to plan accordingly. We'll more than likely be back in MDR around11pm-midnight, so maybe an afterparty can be arranged.
If you have any questions or can contribute something, my name is Captain Joshua Greene, my cell is 443-529-3830, my email is nfamusdaghost@yahoo.com.

Update #1 5/23/2010
I have been in talks with the director of Avalon Department of Recreations to give all of us a reduced trail pass for the weekend. So far I think we'll be able to get them, but it's not for sure yet. Normally we would each have to purchase a $35 pass to ride on the back trails of Catalina. That can still be possible, so keep informed via Facebook or here. Secondly, if anyone has the connects to get either tshirts or spoke cards done, call me 4435293830. Also, the Chief of the Avalon Fire Department wants me to give him a safety plan for the ride, so I will have to get some people currently certified in first aid/cpr in as "Safety Officers". As sexy as that sounds, it really won't have any benifits except you can possibly save someones life. And once again I have to rehash this last point. NO SKINNY TIRED, FLIMSY, OR OTHERWISE ROAD ONLY BIKES ALLOWED! This isn't my call, it's the demand of the Recs Dept. to curb accidents and injurys. I think it is a reasonable request. And if you do bring a single speed or fixie, have some 700x35 and a front brake at least. Lastly, the ticket price is still to be determined, but the money will be due by june 20th at the latest. That's covering the price of the boat, the passes, spoke cards, and tshirts if I can get them. Keep looking for updates as the day approachs.
UPDATEZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
tickets are 60 bucks, which includes the bike permits and the boat ride. BYOF and we'll have places to cook it. Trust me its worth it.
New date posted on facebook and here.
We'll try to have a fundrasier on june 23 for the ride at BRW.
Keep posted and we'll get this thing rolling
