SFV Hanami Ride 2010, First Annual
03.20.10
It's a bike ride, a picnic, and a party! Earlier in the day than we're used to, but you gotta do what you gotta do...
Every year in the Spring, the cherry blossoms bloom. In Japan, they celebrate this with an event called Hanami. It literally means "looking at flowers," but it is roughly translated as "party in the park!"
My friends and I have been celebrating this momentous occasion at Balboa Lake for the past five years. This year, we will ride our bikes there.
Meet at the North Hollywood Metro Station at 10am. Departure: 10:30. The route will be about 10 miles, at a mosey's pace. If we are going too fast for you, let us know, and we will slow down for you. We want everyone to be able to ride with us!
We have route.
We will stay at the park until 5 or 6pm, but you can come and go whenever you want, obviously. The Orange Line and the Orange Line bike path are less than a mile from the picnic spot if you need them.
Bring:
- A bike in working condition
- A lock (all are welcome to share my extra long 25ft cable, but then you're at my mercy when you have to leave / if I have to leave)
- Something to eat and drink for lunch OR money to buy stuff along the way. There will be at least one Vallarta and one liquor stop. Technically, there's no drinking in the park so BE SNEAKY about it.
You might want to bring:
- Helmet if you care
- Lights if you'll be staying until dark
- Spare tube / patch kit / tools (we'll wait for very minor repairs, but if you're grossly underprepared we will drop you)
I will bring:
- Music
- Spoke cards
- Donuts at the start to entice you to show up at that hour
If you feel the need to be crazy, do it on the ride. Be a Good Person and behave yourself at the park, since cops tend to cruise through. We have been hosting this picnic for five years without a hitch, and we want it to continue being fun for everyone.
The route will be posted as soon as I have scouted and finalized it. I will give out my phone number again at the Ride Start just in case anyone ends up needing it.
If you can't / don't want to make the ride, you're still welcome to come hang out with us in the park!
