METRO vs. Cyclists
05.28.09
Metro Board Meeting
Thursday, May 28, 2009 @ 9:30 A.M.
One Gateway Plaza
3rd Floor Board Room
(East side of Union Station)
We are riding to the Metro Board to speak during public comment on three simple issues.
1) On Monday, a Bus Operator "asserted" himself, putting Enci in the unenviable position of choosing to a) hit the bus b) go into the parked cars c) give up the lane. The Bus Operator's behavior is illegal, it's unnecessary and it endangered the life of Enci.
2) The larger issue of Metro training must be dealt with. The common sources of conflict are violations of CVC 27001 and CVC 21750 that result in Bus Operators coming up behind cyclists and honking and unsafely overtaking cyclists.
The Metro manual still instructs Bus Operators to honk at "cyclists and other road hazards...
27001(a) The driver of a motor vehicle when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation shall give audible warning with his horn."
21750. The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle or a bicycle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left at a safe distance without interfering with the safe operation of the overtaken vehicle or bicycle...
3) Customer service that works on evenings, weekends and holidays.
Public comment takes place at the end of the Metro Board Meeting. This can be a few hours! If you can make it great, if not, please give us your comments or experiences by emailing Stephen@ThirdEyeCreative.net
One way or other, we'll be there to urge the Metro Board to work with us so that cyclists and bus operators can peacefully coexist with some mutual respect.
