Bad Idea Ride: 66 miles on Route 66

03.23.07

Another metric century (more or less) starting at midnight (more or less) and running all night! More or less.

This time, the plan is to head out old route 66 in time to see the public races at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. We'll only be riding about 45 miles on route 66; the rest of it is assorted streets to the races and back to the San Bernardino Metrolink station, but that doesn't make for nearly as catchy a tagline.

Details, as they develop, will be posted to bikeboom.com

THIS IS CALLED A BAD IDEA RIDE NOT FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS! Off the top of my head, the main ones are:

>There is no guaranty that you won't get abandoned in the middle of the night when the buses aren't running. We've done a fairly good job in the past of regrouping & looking after each other, but this is explicitly not a "no riders left behind" ride. Bring a bike and body in good working order. Bring the tools, repair items, food, and water that you deem appropriate, & hope you guessed right.

>Though we don't have much in the way of significant hills this time, it's pretty much one long straight shot for the first 50+ miles. This makes for a somewhat psychologically grueling ride. On the plus side, it's harder to get lost.

>We'll be riding at night along a fairly major thoroughfare. Bring lights and batteries. Be alert for idiot drivers. Bars close at 2:00.

>Weather is variable. Be prepared.

>The ride ends about 50 miles from the starting point at the San Bernardino Metrolink station. Part of the plan is to hop a train back into town. The problem with this is twofold: One, you need to bring a few bucks (neighborhood of 8) for train fare. Two, there is only so much room for bikes per train. If we get a big turnout, some folks might have to wait for later trains. If we get a huge turnout, some folks might be confronted with the choice of riding home, finding lodging in San Bernardino, or finagling some other way of getting a ride back west. I really don't have a good solution for this one.

>We'll probably be getting to Redlands around 6 or 7, but the races don't start until 9. My plan is to grab a cup of coffee & a bit of breakfast, or perhaps a quick nap on the City Hall lawn, then hang out for some of the festivities. Some will join me, others will likely head directly back to catch an early train. The point is: the ride will likely fragment about 50 miles in. Co-ordinate your plans with other members of your group, if applicable.

As is the case any time you ride on the public roadways, you assume the risk of inconvenience, injury, or fiery agonizing death should things go awry. This ride is genuinely a bad idea, and you really should have nothing to do with it. If your talk your gullible friends into joining you on the ride, please direct them to the above warnings and disclaimers to give them the chance to wisely back out.

Meet on the top level of the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line station parking garage starting around midnight. We'll roll out shortly after the last train arrives, around 12:30. See mta.net and metrolinktrains.com for transit details.
