CYCLES
Absence rejected us and broke wind. A universe, a big shoe, still lacing itself and unable to tie a definitive knot came from this wind. Hallux valgus, or bunions, is most commonly caused by poor footwear. On January 29, 1998, Eric Rudolph bombed a clinic in Birmingham, Alabama; behind a litany of unjust reasons was a desire to turn the world inside out like a surgical glove. One year later, a man with flat feet went to St. Louis, saw the Gateway Arch, and wept underneath it. These reactions, moved by madness and deformity, are reactions. Reason can be circular, cyclical.
We've injured our minds to find the significant reactions that this show, this night is comprised of and would like to share them with you. The pieces involved are inspired by the idea of 'Cycles.' Retrospectively, cycles function as marks, notches, and reminders that can be broken down into isolated events that are restricted by a specific force or expiration date. Once an isolated event ends another action takes place and a cycle ensues with a series of reactions that eventually lead to another starting point. The elements that exist in the world are agitated by countless forces that eventually, at some point, within given time even cause the earth's course to stutter and find a new true north, and a newer true north.
Like the creatures of observation that we are, it is difficult to ignore the way certain things develop consistent relationships with a predictable outcome. Cycles function as a tradition: an event is observed then anticipated to happen again. With this in mind, a cycle is a man-made application because nothing naturally regenerates itself back to its prime stage of existence; instead, we see something else start brand new.
This January 29, 2009, Heard of Elephants invites you to a look into "Cycles."
