Cambridge Night Ride No2: The Study
08.16.08
Newmarket Roundabout it is again, and the agenda is scientific. Yes, this is Cambridge. The question is: What is cycling in a group? How does it differ from single cycling? Why did we get applause on Mill Road on our Your Taxi is Waiting ride (www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=25806737153 ). Practical and theoretical, we will cycle towards a solution.
Is single cycling sad? Is it lonely? Is it cheap? How is it different from driving, from walking? How do bicycles connect? What happens when many bicycles ride together? How do cyclists breathe and how do they sing as a group? How are they seen as a group?
We use those two wheels every day without much thinking. This autumn it is time to think the bicycle, and think it deeply. We kick it into submissing, but now it is time to listen to the bicycle: What is the communicative structure of the bike. We shall find out, with pedal and bell, as best we can, on the moonlit streets of Cambridge. Bring a light to be seen, dress up for the occasion, and make noise as we go. Tandems, bike buses and other group bicycles welcome, and roll out those Octos (http://ericstaller.com/urban%20UFOs/OCTOS/ )
