The Bad Idea Ride: Hypno-Corona

05.23.08

11:59 PM, May 23rd, 2008.

We will meet at the top level of the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line Station Parking Structure

149 N. Halstead, Pasadena 91107-3127

We will leave after the 12:04 Gold Line Train arrives. People riding the gold line to the starting point should be on the Gold Line train leaving Union Station at 11:34 PM.

This is essentially the dillio: MAP: but there are bail-out points at 81 miles, and at 100 miles. Hell, your slow-assed ride leader is totally planning on taking the 81 mile bail out. Actually, this is LA, anywhere there's a Spires Coffee shop, there's a bail out.

This 81-107 mile jaunt will begin at the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line Station in Pasadena and will end in Anaheim, or perhaps Long Beach.

This ride is inspired by the first 'Bad Idea' ride I went on--which left me, after a pleasant 66 mile ride to Redlands, insisting on biking back to Anaheim Amtrak where I could 'ride back on a train with a bar'. I also recall gorging myself on ribs and napping in three distinctly different public parks on my trip.

On my way from Redlands to Anaheim, I saw many strange things, including a 'penny farthing' themed bike lane marker in Grand Terrace and...

...

...a full-fledged vortex in Corona.

Exploring this latter, ehm, oddity, is the purpose of this season's Bad Idea Ride.

We will be riding in spirit with the awesome Chris Nelson who invented the Bad Idea Ride, but who is now living the soft life somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Lame.

We will meet at the top level of the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line Station Parking Structure and we will leave after the 12:04 Gold Line Train arrives.

We'll float eastwards towards upland, then through the dark agricultural-logistical landscape of Chino, into Corona, where our lack of sleep will help us ease into the Corona vortex. You will be a little disoriented and scared: that's ok, that's natural. God forbid we ever get stuck in that grove--we could be there forever.

Anyway, once the first person realizes what's going on, I'll lead us out of the infinite feedback loop, and towards Anaheim.

We have a choice of riding 81 miles to Anaheim for a $15 dollar return on Amtrak or a 6 dollar return on Metrolink (Metro bus 460 comes every 30 minutes and will also take you from the nearby Disneyland stop to downtown LA for just $3).

The exceptionally cheap may choose to continue to the good old Long Beach Blue Line Station for rides of either 100 miles using Westminster Boulevard or 107 miles following the Santa Ana River trail to the Ocean and taking the PCH back.

BAD BAD BAD! BAD IDEA RIDE! BAD!

Things to consider:

This ride includes a return on an Amtrak, Metrolink, or Metro train: Bring the appropriate amount, plus a minimum of $1.25 per any extra segments of your return trip you'll need to take beyond Union Station. A valid pass of some sort also works.

>We won't try to drop anyone, but this is specifically NOT a "no riders left behind" ride.

Bring a bike in good working order, spare tubes & pump, bus fare (slim pickins at 4 am), & anything else you'd want in the middle of a strangely vacant city in the middle of the night. Don't come out if you're not willing to be on your own.

>Other obvious things to bring: Lights & spare batteries. Water. Maybe anti-inflammatories. A layer or two. Money for snacks. ID. Maps wouldn't hurt. A bit more water. A camera. A friend who'll hang out with you if you get stranded. Common sense, self-sufficiency, & responsibility for your own actions.

>Bring a copy of my cell phone number:
*213(-280-4214
It'll be the primary coordination number for the ride. If you can, it's really a good idea to bring a map with the route drawn in-- see directions below.

I'll provide minimal direction sheets, but they won't show surrounding streets and escape routes.

>Bathroom opportunities will be few and far between.
