Spoke(n) Art Ride - MASCARA

04.12.08

MASCARA Graphic

The Spoke(n) Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles.

The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart's "Gallery Night".

This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature "MÁSCARA", an exhibition of work by artist and Laura Hackney. The exhibition opens on Saturday, April 12, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until May 3, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 7 pm. For further information about the MÁSCARA exhibition, please contact Laura Hackney at laurahackney AT mac.com

The Ride:

The Spoke(n) Art Ride will begin (as it usually does), at the flagpole on the corner of Figueroa and York Blvd. in Highland Park. We will leave at 6:30 p.m. for a mellow ride to about 7 or 8 different galleries open for NELA Art's Second Saturday.

No cover charges, no waivers, just bring a functioning bike (and some blinky lights).

The ride will end at the Bike Oven & Sandpaper Books at 3706 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065 - where an art opening will be in full swing.

For more information about the bike ride, check out the static Spoke(n) Art Page. If you want to find out where we are during the evening, give us a call at 310-902-5439.

Artist's Statement:
My current series of paintings focus on luchadores, or Mexican wrestlers, and are inspired by my time spent in Baja, California. In Baja the landscape is dotted with bright, colorful homes. The air is filled with music and the sounds of children playing along the shoreline. Street vendors are ubiquitous, and many sell máscara, the masks of the luchadores. Seeing these masks everywhere, I found it hard to resist their cheerful, vivid colors.

Upon returning to Pasadena, my latest body of work was created. This series consists of acrylic paintings on stretched canvas and mixed media acrylic paintings. My inspiration for several of the paintings came from the simple shapes found in the paint-by-number paintings that I made as a youth. The mixed media paintings also incorporate the playful altering of photos to make them how they should really be.

The mixed media works are painted on pages taken from Dynamic America, a book published in 1960. It is a history of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the photographs and wording relate to war and its industry.

The exhibition opens on April 12, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until May 3, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 7 pm.
