California: Appeals Court Approves Cell Phone Search During Traffic Stop

This is super scary. I've always been suspicious of having a smart phone because of all the privacy and data issues, but even my little 'old' phone now seems like a liability.
I assume hassling cyclists counts as a traffic stop. Hid yer pixs hid yer sexts

Soon enough there will be a jailbreak app that disables this functionality and people will start getting their phones confiscated

even worse.... I think it was on NPR where I heard about some kind of new tool the cops have the replicates a cell tower in a van. by doing so they can scan which phone numbers are in an area and ID you through that means.

If you have a smartphone, you can simply set a security unlock code. If entering the code is a pain in the ass, many smartphones will let you set it so that you only have to do it if the phone hasn't been used in X minutes. Obviously, you will refuse to give the code to any cop, which is entirely within your rights--if he gets a warrant, he can try to crack it or use other means to read the data, but you are never obligated to give up the code.
