Cyclists Shot...

The concerns about bike thefts in Los Angeles increased Friday as LAPD detectives said they are searching for two men who are responsible for shooting two cyclists who fought the robbers in Koreatown.
One of the victims was so badly wounded during the April 4 robbery that he was only released from the hospital last week, police said.
“They nearly killed him,” said LAPD Det. Dennis Bopp, who is investigating the shootings. “It was a crime of opportunity that turned to violence.”
The shooting unfolded about 3.a.m., when the two victims stopped to get food from a catering truck at Pico Boulevard and Westmoreland Avenue. The victims left their bicycles unguarded nearby. As the men bought food, two men walked up and grabbed their bikes.
The cyclists saw their bikes being wheeled away, chased the robbers and began struggling for control of the bicycles, Bopp said.
One of the robbers pulled out a handgun and shot one of the victims in the ribcage. Then, as they rode off, he shot the second cyclist in the shoulder.
The shooting comes as the LAPD reported a 29% increase in bike thefts last year compared to 2008. Nearly 2,000 bikes were reported stolen last year in Los Angeles -- and authorities believe the actual number of thefts was much higher because so many people don't report stolen bikes.

I'm beside myself with anger right now. That is terrible.I hope who ever the victim is he heal quicky. If anybody on here knows who did this they should report it.Stealing and robing is wrong, but shooting someone over a bike, now that takes a real piece of shit.I bet that kid makes his Momma proud.Doesn't even have the balls to jack a car like a real gangsta.

Im thinking, are these other riders looking for parts or just thieves flipping bikes? But if you're gonna shoot someone over a bike in order to flip it.... god damn, imagine buying parts off these people... what kind of risk / profit is this?
Cars were different, that was a whole other price bracket... but bikes? I doubt these were pro level rigs. I mean, it's nothing new (recall people getting jacked / shot for sneakers?), but it just reminds us how insanely stupid some people are... a fucking bicycle?
Bike culture is increasing so much... the blessing and the curse.
This just fucking sucks.

Cyclists need to start retaliating against thieves. The cops don't do shit.
palucha6604.30.10 - 10:00 pm

Retaliation really isn't a good answer. These two guys got shot for trying to stop the theives when they could have (probably) avoided it by locking up the bikes, even for a short food stop.

what i have feared over the last year and a half finally came true in this post.
more scary, these kids who "got away" with the robbery and shooting probably think they got "juice" now and may be quicker to pull the trigger.

valid point but being terrorized into that kind of fear/worry that i have to lock up when i'm at a taco truck is the wackness.

I disagree. It's just a bike. It's not worth possibly losing your life over.
The cops have been cracking down more in a larger way.

Only thing is the fact that these people have most likely blended back into the woodwork and will present themselves by a matter of chance.
Until then, keep them inside when not used, or circle the wagons and cluster-lock when out and about.
One positive thing I could boast about my area is that bicycles seem to be at the bottom of the list when it comes to thievery.
It's all mainly "B and E" up here for now.

We someone needs to come up with is some kind of lojack/microchip that's inside the frame.
BWiize05.1.10 - 1:51 am

the problem is cost. cost of manufacturing, maintenance, use of hardware/satellites, distribution, reclamation woes. one more thing to consider is getting various police departments to take it seriously. lapd may be on board but what about other pd's.
propositioning lojack to get on this could work but you have to convince them that the market is there.
Also another issue is recovery time. it's is an issue depending where its going. i talked to someone who knows what some theives do with the bikes. they take bikes as a whole to sell the whole bike to scrap yards for money. so dealing with the scrap yards is something to consider. i don't know what their position is on the whole deal. that is just one aspect.

I myself would like to see the police put more sting operations together.Maybe they could even team up with a private group that puts out the bate for them and let's them know where to get the offender, like the 20/20 to catch a preditor series.

ive had my bike stolen. not hijacked. but ive ran into people trying to mug/ jack me off of the street a couple times. dont be a fucking dumbass and just sitr there and let them take your shit. go into the street, the other way, evade the mother fuckers, i had my really expensive camera and almost got it stolen like last week one block from my house. the d ude walked up to me and i felt something was gonna go wrong. he walked up told me give me everything you have i started wlaking back, told him you aint getting shit then smashed out into middle of the street. started running up and looked back, the fool was right behind me and i just kept running. i woulda gone back fro his ass but i had to call a girl i promised id call when i get back home. luckily we talked for like 20 mins and i didnt go back. if i did i dunnow hat i would have done. but he would have ended up in the hospital thats for sure. just be keen on where your at, who you see, dont act scared, that makes you an easy target. carry something with you. i ususally have a wrench or 2 connected to a bike chain in my pocket at all times. but i recently lost it. lol and before that when id ride BMX i was comming homne from a bike shop when i bought new bars and this dude was on the side walk, my homie passed the guy and stopped me, had a shank in his hand and told me to give him my bike.i picked it up to keep distance between us and i said fuck you and again, and booked it into the street. theives for the most part are stupid as fuck. dont be afraid to run. jdont just stand there and say....duuuuh okey here ya go. get the fuck out of there. dont try to fight them, dont act all tough. just GTFO ASAP. if you cant and they have a knife or something thats not a gun. hit the mother fucker with your bike as a last resort.

Man last time some fool tried to jack my bike at the lucy's on pico and union I socked his ass up as he grabbed my bike and was trying to ride away. Fucker pulled out a shank and I grabbed my bike and tossed it at his face. It all happened so quick by the time I knew what was going on I had his homies chasing my ass down the talking about how they're gonna kill me cause this was their barrio. Luckily I booked it with my bike and in one piece. But in that same place a friend of mine was kicking it just trackstanding when some cholo cracked him in the head with a metal pipe and another tried to take his bike but he wouldn't let go so they it him in his hands abd took his bike... and I know that it was the same people in every occasion including this guy getting shot... its the 18th st gangster fucks. They're used taking what they want cause they're strapped up.

If you're over 18 you can legaly purchase a nice semi automatic rifle at gun stores.
I suggest something of the AK 47 variant. This will give you all the respect you need
from the Barrio thugs. Just think they act this way when there is the rule of law.
What is in store when society breaks down similiar to the receint riots in London ?

Yeah, it's like I always say: there's nothing more convenient for self-defense while riding a bicycle than a big, long, heavy shoulder-fired weapon. Sure, you may laugh...just like they all laughed when I started carrying a 120VAC air compressor around with me to inflate my bike tires. We'll see who gets the last laugh when I get a flat some night in a sketchy area that happens to have a convenient source of AC power nearby, assholes!
