Thread Box:
310 SPRINTS
Thread started by pretti*ugli at 04.29.09 - 10:36 am

TITLE SEZ IT ALL.

I was speaking with jonnyboy about possibly starting sprints closer to home. The idea would be to keep the same process and organization of the 818 sprints. The idea of having different classes and distances would be a good idea also. Use this thread to express your desires, ideas for location and frequency, and general shit talking and bravado. DONT FORGOT YOUR CAPS LOCK AND SPAM!!!

if you guys due this, i will start a site, and you will need official time trackers, so we can start a league.

the 818 has a bike path with 700m of sprinting room.

and then we can have tourneys.

the first location that came to mind was the ballona creek bike path that stretch of flat right before mustache bridge.

that stretch of land off the bike path on santa monica beach. Has great lighting and is relatively empty at night...

If we could get the LAB & lafixed crews out to this it would seriously up the ante, I'm sure there are many ppl in those groups that would probably digg it™ as well. I rode with VCR last night (Venice Chill Ride) and there are definitely quite a few guys that know how to hustle. Hern is a madman! Having all the fastest guys participating in an event like this would collectively make everyone faster...

If you are around people who challenge you more, you will get much better in a lesser amount of time. This seems to go with about any part of life. Bringing a little competitive spirit won't hurt either!

Trying to think of good locations...
-Costco parking lot
-Wide residential streets

Proposed locations
1.Ballona Creek Bike path(+for the land, and distance. -for lighting and width)

2.Santa Monica off the bike path(+lighting and width. -for sand)

3.Costco=probably best idea

4.into opposing traffice

i havent done that ride in a long time. the first time we did the drags it was after riding through the tunnel under lax and getting pinkberry. every racer put in a dollar and the winner took all. i went home with $8. they normally just ride from the circle up to westwood to get diddy riese.

Jefferson Blvd to the east of Overland.

Westchester Pkwy north of LAX would allow for up to 2 mile races.

Alex Thompson

up to 2 mile races? i dunno much about distance but would that be a normal sprint or a relatively short one.

I thought about it and finally my brain has produced something worthwhile :)

1. shorter distances sprints(for the fixed, single speed etc crew)

2. Longer sprints for those with gears.

so two classes of races.. that way everyone can participate.

also i was thinking the ones who end up waxing everyone will have a class of their own. While the slower ones can stay in our own class and progress.

pretti*ugli

Good thing you have me here. Two miles is 3218 meters . . . in other words, on Westchester there are relatively flat sections where you could have a 1000 m race, but if you're willing to allow for a hill, you can do over 3000m. You would need to cork in one place (Loyola), but there's barely any cross traffic there - maybe one car every 5 min.

Alex Thompson

3000m is a long ass sprint.

This sounds good... I second the Ballona bike path... It is a great stretch, empty, and pretty flat... Another good spot would be Rose, next to Penmar Park.

Rogue Rida
04.29.09 - 2:11 pm

reply

People walk and run on Ballona at night and they're difficult to see. And sometimes they ride without lights. I know this cause I used to run it nights. It's one thing to ride it and dodge the nonsense, but racing could kill someone, and with railings on both sides, a collision ends with a bar to the face.

Alex Thompson
04.29.09 - 3:07 pm

what about the stretch of road on admiraly way?

or even the bike path if you can clear it.

but everybody likes to "run" to "stay in shape" on the westside.

_iJunes
04.29.09 - 3:12 pm

reply

True Alex, a crash would suck... As for peds at night... I ride the path almost nightly and rarely come across anyone... This is around 10 pm. I have noticed a decrease in traffic lately. Not sure if it is the robbery outbreak or what, but it gets pretty desolate.

Rule #1... Don't fuckin crash...

Rogue Rida

the asphault path on dockweiler is good, there's an area that has no speedbumps or anything.

admiralty way has a decent amount of traffic, even at night.

venice chill did some races in an underground parking lot in santa monica but it was a circuit... i'm sure it would get busted up if you did it more than a couple times or spent more than an hour there.

cubcamp did mini-crits on fiji way, but there was traffic and we were in front of the sheriff station, it wasn't a problem but there were only like 10 of us.

i really dont know the street names dude.

Johnny also said that costco in culvercity, by the in and out burger.

I think thats probably the best bet...that place is wide and long(thats what she said) and has lights...

Also Monday nights is when i was thinking of having it around 9ish 10ish. About twice a month... How often does Noho run the sprints?

the one thing you guys should really try is a 20m neutral start. to get the whole clip in issue resolved.

at the 818 sprint, nearly every sprint has been decided from the clip in time. if the clip-in didnt affect the outcome, it was truly a miracle.

make your 'track' 20m longer and everybody clip in, have a marshall pace the netural zone, and when the marshall drops his hands, you go.

rbi- are you talking about Grand near windward circle? That is a super wide and very chill road. It can get kind of craggy at times cause the road is in shit condition near the edges, but my memory may be exaggerating the amplitude of the bumps.

Main St heading north out of windward is super smooth and has only a little traffic at night, but I still like Costco better!

Hey! What about Ocean Front Walk?? That shit is super flat, smooth, straight, and NO cars. Just silly pedestrians from time to time- the peds seem to go home around 10. We could even hang out at On the Waterfront by Mini Pier beforehand for those who want to have a few drinks, and then start the races once the pedestrian activity dies down.

we could also do it at will rodgers state beach, and the end of the bike bath. they have that huge parking lot there, its wide, its long, and it would be pretty nice to chill on the beach after we race.

Also, all this talk about racing kinda makes me wanna set somethin up, somethin pretty sick........ I was thinkin of a full on race, no course or track, just a starting and end point, the rule, you have to get their on you bike, choose any path you want, you just have to be the first one there. have as many people as we can racing,
just imagine about 30-50 people in a mad dash across town. most likley be about 4-6 mile races........anyone down.?

however i am looking for people to help organize the MR version of the little 500. the race from breaking away.

there are some rules to this, but generally 4 team members, do several laps, one at a time on one bike. the bike must be exchanged between riders a certain number of times.

on top of that to keep the other 4 riders busy, there could be bench games like some sort of sudoku or crossword puzzle, and each team has to consume 24 cans of beer, no matter who drinks the most of it.

_iJunes

clip in time should count.. or we could hold the riders. for that matter if anyone who rides a fixed gear can't trackstand long enough to start a race they fucking suck anyway.

and 100-200m is too short, gear ratio will determine everything.

THINK OF THE GEAR QUEERS

_iJunes
04.29.09 - 5:44 pm

reply

I think 200 for the single speeds and 800 for the geared bikes

When we started the NoHo sprints we tried just about every distance, we decided that for the distance 200 m seemed to offer the best view for people watching, kept the racing close at the finish ( unless you raced RBI who was way back there ) and it helped speed up the time it took to get everyone raced, other wise we would find that we were there until 12 pm still doing finals.

It seemed it was better to sand bag at the start so if you qualified you didn't have to wait for an hour and let your body cool down then race someone that had just raced and was ready to go. I had to race a MTB, fixed and road just to stay warm so in the finals i didn't hurt myself. That was when we switch to the shorter 200m so it only took a few seconds to make the drag happen, the rest of the time was spent drinking PBRs and talking trash about RBI, ha ha

Ocean Front Walk in Venice is not good. I used to live down there and you will run into trouble with homeless people - for sure. And the thing is, it's wide, but people get knocked down and robbed down there after dark. Or people stumble around drunk. Too many variables.

Westchester Pkwy - I'm telling you. Go check it out. 7 mile ride from Venice/Mar Vista, maybe shorter, and shows the land South of the creek some love. And you can hit IHOP on the way home - two choices of IHOPness.

sandbagging is intentionally losing so that you don't move up in your class ranks.

I remember there was this guy I used to have to race when there was not enough girls. He was intermediate, but there was some nationals coming up and he didn't want to win local races and move up to expert before the nationals, so he would sandbag...so that he could stay intermediate and then win nationals, ya know.

One time, my friend and I had to race him, so WE sandbagged, forcing him to win. It was hilarious. He got so mad.

I definitely think will rogers beach would be the place to do this. The culver bike path also has some long--and well lit stretches, but personally I'd much rather be next to the beach than a housing project. After all-city, I just want to race.
