Free American Apparel T-shirts
Thread started by Bernie at 05.19.08 - 7:44 am

Please let any and all bike groups on your site know and a wide variety of sizes of Legalize LA t-shirts are available for free distribution to LA bikers.

Please contact me at this web address for your requests. Min request is 250 t-shirts to be picked up at our factory on Alameda.

i have boycotted American Apparel and will not start buying their products until they start using child labor in foreign countries like they should.

also, has anyone seen these t-shirts? is it possible to bleach out the "legalize la" marketing campaign tag line and replace it with something about bicycling? just asking.

There is plenty of reasons to poke American Apparel ... but yeah it does cost that much more to make shit in LA and pay your workers $12 ph.

I think the average wage for garment work for places like china and bangladesh is like $1 a day. So the employees at AA get paid about 10,000% more and their tees only cost about 1000% more than those shitty tee-shirts you can get in china town. That a bargain if you ask me. Plus AA shirts let you show off your nipples.
.......................

The idea of repurposing the tees is Brilliant!

trick, you are mistakenly believing that "Made In The USA" means a better made garment. It doesn't. It only means that the item was stitched by foreign workers here, rather than 'there."

AA is fine and doing something that is better than others. It's just their "we are oh so wonderful" marketing that is such an insult.

I'm sure there's at least two sides to the American Apparel story, but isn't most marketing just a way to differentiate your product from the rest by whatever means you can use?

American Apparel recently opened its first retail store in downtown Beijing, China. It's all the rage partly because its American but also because it's American clothing made in downtown LA instead of made in China. Wealthy hip Chinese think there's much more street-cred in wearing clothes made in the US, since that's so damn rare these days.

I guess it is just marketing after all - simply a way for American Apparel to differentiate their brand from all the others out there.

They currently differentiate their brand with socially-responsible kiddie porn. If they're trying to branch into socially-responsible bike porn, then um, more money for them, I guess? We could complain, but I hear the bike culture sold out years ago.

On the bright side, at least cyclists don't have to pay to take part in their marketing campaign.

indig,

if people are living here and working at AA they are not foreigners they are Americans just like our gubinator.

don't get me wrong ... i'm quick to admit that AA's construction is often a little schlocky but personally I like the fit and feel. I am happy to buy something so plain.

I do think its a littpricey for what it is ... but just like buying organic food, I know that there is a reason for the price. I do think that on some level AA must advertise what they are doing to justify their higher prices.

While AA politics aren't perfect (they are anti-union and very quick to threaten to sue the press)... and they open themselves up to criticism by putting their business practices in the forefront, I have to say that of everything, the Legalize LA campaign is probably one of the smarter things they have done.

Unlike some bullshit like ronald mc donald house that takes care of a few kids with cancer while those burgers and fries are killing people (and torturing animals) by the boatload. At least AA is putting their money where their mouth is.

I was documenting a conference on immigrant integration at USC recently and the last speaker of the day was our mayor Tony V.

One of the first things he mentioned was the JFK quote on an AA bus bench ad. The fact that that type of advertising is putting out what I consider to be a positive message on a worldwide level and being recognized by big political players is pretty interesting and marks a shift in marketing I don't really recall seeing much since Ben & Jerry's hit the scene.

Anyway whatevs. the dude is a perv. his shit is everywhere and everybody wears it. And the place exists to make mo $$$s while preaching a narrow political ethic targeted to the bougie and bohos. Plenty of reasons for the meta-hip to say its all a big stupid scam. And they may be right. I still like the clothes though and they end up being way less expensive then most of the stupid euro crap that people buy at barny's and macy's.

"if people are living here and working at AA they are not foreigners they are Americans just like our gubinator. "

Even if they send the bulk of their earnings back home and have no interest in being US citizens?

Yeah, AA is a scam. They've found their marketing angle and they're exploiting it to the max, just like good capitalist pigs should.
