CicLAvia is 10/09/11!!!
We are currently looking for volunteers for the 10/09/11 CicLAvia event and for Pre-10/09/11 Canvassing.
For the event we will need volunteers on the route assisting first time riders with basic bike repairs (mostly flats), at rest stops and hubs distributing water or with t-shirts sales and at cross traffic intersections making sure people are following traffic direction.
As for Pre-10/09/11 Canvassing, we need volunteers help do outreach - door-to-door canvassing to get the word out on the CicLAvia route (Bicycle District, MacArthur Park, Little Tokyo, Chinatown & Downtown)
For Pre-10.9.2011 Canvassing go here to sign-up.
For 10.9.2011 event volunteering, go here to sign up!.

Did I mention you get a Volunteer CicLAvia shirt if you volunteer? :)

I would love to stand around and sell shirts! Do you have key chains, coffee mugs, and those giant foam hands too? Better yet, we could corral everyone in and sell them water for 4 bucks a bottle.

I'm not so into selling shirts.
I can volunteer to fix a flat or to help with directions. I'l even help direct traffic.
If you asked everyone to volunteer for those things, we could police ourselves and we wouldn't need to have all those cops there that drive really fast on the street even though it's supposed to be closed to all cars. It would cut the costs if it was it all volunteer operation. Permits are ridiculous though.
Joe Borfo09.28.11 - 8:35 am

Selling shirts is only one the volunteer options offered. What we really need are folks on bikes who know the basics in bike repairs as Route Angels. Knowing how to fix flats, change inner tube, adjust loose chains and seats will be a very helpful skill. There will be several first time riders out that day and most of you regardless if you're volunteering or not will be helping out other folks who dont know these basic skills. CicLAvia will be providing Route Angels with inner tubes and patches to help out as much as they can.
And also we are having volunteers assisting at the crossing points where cars are allowed to cross the route to assure everyone is still following traffic direction.
We have those options to cut down those cost but we need volunteers in order for that to happen. One shift is only two hours and at your preferred location.

Good.
I'm signed up. I'm encouraging others to as well.
Can't the Mayor just waive the permit fees and the need for so many cops to be there like they do it in Bogota?

I've done Route Angel duty for the last two CicLAvias - it's good way to help out and still get to ride around and enjoy the event.

@rollers,
I've done route angel duty at the last two CicLAvias too. The first time, I spent a lot of time helping with flats but I also got to ride the route. The second time, there were fewer flats and I got to ride a lot more. I also have a volunteer t-shirt from each ride. I leave with the good feeling that I'm doing something positive about encouraging more people to get on their bikes.
Are you doing route angel again? I'm doing the first shift out of Hollenbeck, hope to see you there.

Everyone should try to get their work or school to publicize Ciclavia by office wide e-mail or other means.

It's been a long time since I posted here, but what does a Bike Valet do?
Noble Experiment10.4.11 - 1:58 pm
reply
A Bike Valet takes bikes and puts them up on rack and giving the owner of the bike a ticket with a number that matches so they can retrieve their bike back. They make sure bikes are being watched for return to their rightful owner.
If you would like to volunteer for bike valet, LACBC is doing bike valet at El Pueblo & Little Tokyo. To sign up for bike valet email martin@la-bike.org or go
Sign-up here!
CicLAvia volunteers will be doing basic bike repairs along the route and assisting at crossing points.
Email me at ciclaviavolunteer@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer as a route angel or at crossing points.

Yes. This event is lame. All it does is tell people that bicycles are toys that can only be used in some artificial safe-zone. It does not promote daily/commute bike use. I think it sends the wrong message. Now we have these jerks wanting to get people to hawk their wares, it's just some money making venture which is fine and all, just be honest about it.

I disagree. I like all bike events. Whether they're private, exclusive, little shin-digs in the middle of the night, public bike events in a parking lot, corporate bike events in a park or city sponsored bike events that shut down city streets for pedestrians and cyclist. It's all good. Haters gonna hate. I thought this last one was the best one in a while.

Except for the BYOB, BYOBBQ, don't your events match the above criteria?
I mean, if a bunch of morons wanna get on their tallbikes and do their Burning Hippy Lamerfest, why can't non-lame people of all stripes go out and ride?
Do you want Ciclavia to have this big fucking sign stating" We're holding this to make Profit"? I mean, most LA media does speak of how the local economy benefits from this event. As opposed to a bunch of fuck-o's buying beer at the liquor store to litter the parking lot.
Oh wait, you're being ironic or sumthin'. Nice.

I get your points. Like I said I don't have problem making money but trying to get people to volunteer for the "cause" when the cause is not bikes but $$$, I don't care for that too much. I agree that getting people on bikes is a good thing, the method I find fault with, I think it sends the wrong message.
And no worries man, I clean up all those beer cans at the end of the day, I'm throuough!
Also, I'm never ironic, just moronic.
