Team Bearclaw and crew. That was one fucking brutal test of my personal will. Thankyou for hosting. I will never forget that ride. You guys are Manwhiches, Manburgers, and Manimals.... I cant believe I'm saying this, but I'm looking forward to Mt. Baldy Death March II....... perhaps when its not 110 degrees out?

STRETCHY PANTS!

So how high was the total climb? I know from the base (where I live pretty much) it's about 800 feet in elevation, if you guys started in Pasadena (approx 400 ft) you had a pretty good climb anyway (that 20 mile slope can be killer at times)....

We started off in E. Duarte actually. Encanto Park.... To be honest I was foolishly ill prepared for this ride. no breakfast, 4 hrs of sleep, and vans shoes with clipless with a big ass backpack laden with crap I didnt need.... I fell behind by over an hour and missed the last four miles to the ski lifts which I heard was the most brutal climb of the route at 1500 ft of gritty road. wow! I also fucked up my CO2 cartridge fixing a flat and rode the last 15 miles on about 70 lbs of air from my weaksauce air pump. lessons learned. lessons learned. as the elevation maxed out there were stretches where I was just so exhausted I had to stop for a breather every 1000ft. I was becoming delirious in that fucking heat. I rolled up on Mt. Baldy village just as some of the guys were getting back from the ski lift climb. I was DONE and sooooo thankful to be sitting in a chair inside a cooled restaurant. Manimals I tell you.

Next time I'm rocking a full kit, fuck the sherpa backpack and slr camera and I'm heading to REI to get me some clip-in shoes if I can get em in size 15/16 that is.

if you have $150 to drop, get a pair of sidi bullet2s. they are mountain bike shoes that sort of look like road shoes. they come in huge sizes. i think mine are 55 or 56 in euro sizes, whatever that converts into american. sort of pricey but totally worth it. even better with a pair of dr scholls inserts.

I did some research on it a while back. if ya have gigantor feet like me you know the problems.... I fit anywhere from size 14 to size 16 in depending on the brand / type of shoe and since no one has these sizes in stock I am asked to either drop a deposit or pay in advance for the store to order them just to see if they will fit.... not to mention the matter of figuring out which pedal system to go with which also depends on the shoe brand. too many variables so I gave up on it. I need a spot that will order up a couple different shoes for me with no deposit required. height discrimination sucks. haha

i wear a size 16 too! and youre taller than me!
but i know exactly what youre going through. im used to just walking into a shoe store and saying "hey, bring me the biggest size shoe you have" and being able to choose from like two different ones.
i lucked out at the trek store because they actually had a pair that fit me.
i hope to make it to wolfpack on monday. if you want to try mine on to see if they fit i will bring them. i wont bring the pedals though.

Roadblock: It was great having you and the guys come along on the ride. I was pumped when I saw you rolling up to the restaurant at Baldy Village, nobody was sure if you had decided to stick it out and come the whole way.

If you're looking for pedals, check out the LOOK Keo's. The base model isn't much money, and it's a great product.

We'll be doing this ride more often in the winter. Doing it on hot days like yesterday are more of a "lets do a hard ride on one of the hottest days of the year" type deals. Doing it when it's cooler out is way more fun, just not as much of a kick in the balls.

Good having you along, I'll let you know when it's gonna happen again, you guys are always welcome. Did you do the Wolfpack ride, too?

i have heard good things about those look pedals, but roadblock, those pedals are for road cleats and not mtb cleats, so they wont fit on those shoes i posted above. i hope you find what you need post haste!

I have no idea what the average speed was, I didn't have a computer on my bike, but I was one of the slowest guys. I'll ask some of the other guys what theirs was.

As for gearing, a lot of them were running compacts up front, 50/34 up front and anything that works in the back.

Team Bearclaw rider Freddie was the man, rockin' a 39/23 as his easiest gear. On a 20% section, that is crazy. He is a man.

Much like Cole is a man for drinking Beer instead of water at the half-way point of the ride.

My easy gear is a 39/27.

Keep it real.

As one of the faster riders on the way up I was rolling a 53/39 in the front and a brand new 12/27 on the back (for which I was very grateful). My average speed for the first 35 miles or to the high point was 12.5 mph. That includes a little descending and lots of 10-14 mph climbing on GMR. The last five miles were much slower. The last 100 meters of 20 percent grade I was going five mph in my 39/27 with my heart rate at 210 bpm.
