Thread Box:
Grant $$ for those under 25
Thread started by bike punk at 06.1.09 - 8:13 pm

Do something bike-related! Cause we know our own city won't do shit. If you are serious, I can help you. I'm sure others would help too.
Get a bunch of people to each apply and use the money for some cool bike projects that either gives us some resources or gets more people on bikes.

Over the course of 2009, Do Something will award fifty-two grants of $500 each to help young people implement or expand a community action project, program, or organization.
To be eligible, applicants must be no
older than 25 and a U.S. or Canadian citizen. Do Something grants
cannot be used to fund travel costs, individual sponsorships, shipping
costs, individual school fees, or fundraising expenses. Do Something
grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Grants will be
awarded on a weekly basis. Visit the Do Something Web site for complete
program information, including judging criteria.

That was my first thought on reading this. I think we could get 4 or 5 Bikery volunteers to apply for it. That would be awesome.

The most difficult part here is not thinking too big. In some ways coming up a way to spend $50,000 is easier than $500. The project needs to be small, cheap and realistic. Ideas are easy, but you need to look at what you can really accomplish. I suggest starting with where you already ride and how it could be improved. Start something at a high school or a Rec center? People who fund this stuff want to see that you are capable of laying out a plan that has realistic steps.
It's a great reason to do a little project.

nathan,

this situation really reminds of me of Aesops fable 'The Grasshoper and the Ant'

i mean I would totally understand if these people worked a while to earn a sizable capitol and could support themselves to be funemployed. in fact that would be beneficial. but when they are living of their parents money, unemployment checks and ect. its counterproductive

think of this scenario, the funemployed is the kid who decided subject X was boring and doesn't want to do his work. so he cheats and coasts by without doing the work and getting the A. how do you think everyone else feels who busted their balls working hard to get the same grade

america is in a freaking recession. and it will take all of us to solve it. i mean what do you say to people like me who return unspent financial aid so it could go back into the system and be used for someone else, or people who don't cheat their taxes, and who donate their time to volunteer and ect.
