Thread Box:
what tires to buy?
Thread started by Gav at 05.2.09 - 11:31 am

I just noticed my rear tire has long tear in it so I need to go to a shop and buy tires today.

Searching the forums I see people suggesting Armadillos, Continentals, and Gatorskins. Is there a specific model tire from these brands I should look for?

reply

bump, I'm desperate and shop employees intimidate me

those are the models of the different brands

Armadillos are Specialized

Gatorskins are continentals I believe?

continental is a brand

specialized armadillos, continental gatorskins, bontrager hardcases are all different brands of thorn resistant tire

these tires are EXPENSIVE. almost $50 a piece, but worth the money.

But if you aren't overly concerned about getting flats, you can go with something else that is good but not so expensive

I only bought armadillos for the bike I ride on wolfpack because I ain't tryin to get stuck alone in south central at 1 am with a flat you know.

but on my bike that I ride everywhere else, I just have some regular old Ritcheys.

and if you shouldn't be intimidated most bike shop staff are super friendly and willing to help.

Of course, chicks have it easy in the people wanting to help department...so go up to the girls that work there! maybe that will be less intimidating?

I love the girls at o20, they nice.

Really? I always hear people just saying those names so I assumed they were brands :P now i feel stupid

also, you can check out performancebike.com and nashbar.com, check out the tires on there and get an idea of price ranges and customer reviews, etc.

good luck!

no, that is a reasonable assumption, you are not stupid!

if you went in to a shop and asked for armadillos or gatorskins, they would know exactly what you are talking about

but if you went in and said hey I want some specialized tires or continental or bontrager tires, they would probably be like ookk uhh WHICH continental or specialized or bontrager do you want? you know

Go with tires you can afford. I've always used pretty cheap tires because I use tire liners. I've never had a puncture flat.

If you make the initial investment in tire liners you don't have to make repeat investments in "tough" tires.

On my every day bike, I run cheap ass tires with no tire liners.

I haven't got a flat yet, knock on wood.

a lot of not getting flats is just proper tire maintenance and riding smart.

like don't hit potholes (cough junes cough cough)

duderina speaks truth, if you can commit to regularly maintaining the pressure on your tires (couple times a week) then you'll deff avoid pinch flats, even with cheap tires.

Gav, just go to Nashbar.com and find some tires that are the right size, price and color.

I got the Bontrager Hard Case. I ask the mechanic at i.Martin for the most durable tire and that's what he recommended from what they stock.

Good choice Gav. I rode the hardcases till they split and never had a flat.

I guess I can get tire liners too but I replaced the tire I had because it was tearing. I wonder what I rolled over.
