Makes me thirsty. Of those killed cyclists, how many were on tallbikes? My money is on none.

There are a lot of bike fatalities among middle-aged men involving alcohol.

Not because there's a secret Master's level crankmob out there, but because a bicycle is how a lot of people who lose their licenses to DUI get around, and they don't stop cruising around drunk just because they don't have a car.

The article was looking to be inflammatory. It goes on later to say that 3/4 of all fatalities were from riders that weren't wearing helmuts? Why not lead with that?

My friends at NYC Streetsblog took the article apart pretty well:

only 3% of the fatalities, they wore a helmet.
14 were bicycle only, 4 of those were a parked car, 1 of those was an open door

Fat Tire in cans! Lightweight and safety positive.
Be careful riding around with beer though ... you could drop your beer.

Also there is 1200% increased chance of having a bike fatality if you are drunk and unhelmeted.

Use the Schwartz!

OK, so 18 out of 84 people that died over 10 years, that they did valid tests on had alcohol in their system. That's not much of a statistic, quite frankly.

Fat Tire in cans = the obvious choice.

Notice it says, "pack in in, pack it out".

They mean for picnics, of course. Pack it in ... your picnic basket. Which can go in your bike basket, alongside the lox and cream cheese.

"God I can't wait for picnic season again," I just thought, as though I didn't live in Los Angeles. Back in the olden days, when I lived in New York, you couldn't have picnics something like 7 months out of the year. It was horrible.
