Square taper Bottom Brackets
Thread started by bentstrider at 03.17.09 - 4:56 pm

So, I had to get a new bottom-bracket for the Hummer due to the old ones bearings getting shot to shit.

I go in here asking for a 123mm, some off-kilter size and the shop-owner tells me he has to special order those due to "Splined" Bottom-brackets being all the rage now.

I don't know about everyone else, but these BB's seem relatively, common-place to me and to say that they have been "obsolete" for some time is somewhat of a mystery.

Anywho, I went ahead and placed the order, but not before asking him why they began to overstock one type and completely phase out another.
Main reason: This store is a predominantly, roadie-operated establishment with the newest tech being ordered as soon as it becomes available.

And with these guys and a complete, jackass on the other end of town being the only bicycle shops up here, a trip "down-the-hill"(what everyone in the Victorville-area refers to South of the Cajon Pass) is my only other option.

There used to be this place called "J & K Sports" that went out of business last year.
This guy had everything you possibly needed, mainly due to his own experience with urban cycling and Down-Hill MTB.

This was one of those "sealed" BB's, the type where it's sheathed all around, practically.
If this was one of the "old-style" ones consisting of two cups, two retainers, bearings and a shaft, then I wouldn't be bitching right about now.
Essentially, I could only pull wobbly-pedal so long before smoke began pouring out my bracket-hole!!!

Or just get 3-5 Shimano bottom brackets for the same price, and be able to install it with a standard Shimano BB tool, (also a tiny fraction of the cost of a Phil BB tool).

Well, thanks for all the suggestions, but I'm sticking with the standard component I ordered.

Apart from that, I still say another, quality bike-shop could work out up here.
These guys are too busy pushing unnecessary equipment onto people that just want a "beach cruiser".

but JB, why buy three to five shimano bbs when all you need is a single phil wood one? thats stupid.

"but JB, why buy three to five shimano bbs when all you need is a single phil wood one? thats stupid."

The point I was making is that all most people really need is a single Shimano BB, so saving 2/3rds-80% is a good deal.

Not everybody needs an $80-100bb.

if you spend a little extra money on a bike part as important as a bb, the less problems youll have in the long run.

Square tapers are on their way out

Since you're replacing your BB anyway just get something splined

If you stay with square, make sure you understand the difference between JIS and ISO

Square tapers are easy to work on and the cranks that fit them can be found almost anywhere.

Why switch to some new style spline that just costs more and is a pain in the ass to find parts for?

When I have my recumbent reconfigured to a 26" rear wheel, I may install a splined on it.

Aside from that, I'm riding my bikes until they go boom!!

WTF?

in my experience its actually harder to find good square taper stuff...

if you went the extra step and went to outboard bearings the difference in stiffness over the square taper is significant
