century question
Thread started by ephemerae at 02.18.09 - 9:03 pm

So I just rode my first century on Saturday, and ever since, my right Achilles tendon is really really sore whenever I'm walking. Also the top of my calf where it goes into the back of the left knee is really sore. I'm wondering if I need to get better fitted (probable) or if there's anything else I need to worry about.

Ideas?

reply

Sounds like tendonitus'
This is caused by not having enough base miles in and pushing to hard for to long.
Ya, check your fit on the bike this can be a contributer.

The cure, stay of your bike and rest.

if you keep training it could get worse.

If it does turn out to be tendinitis, then learn to ice those places after workouts.

I would get that same pain in the back of my knee/top of calf area when I started Bicykillers, it would make a wiered pop when I'd walk up stairs too. I think it has to do with pushing it to hard too soon, as it's gone now.

I meant after you heal learn to ice your problem area after workouts.

Just in case it sounded like I was saying that you dont need to rest

Ben, that used to happen to me last year training for ALC any time I went over 80 miles. Once I hit that 80 mile mark, it was excrutiating pain from my left Achilles heel shooting upwards. As soon as I got my SIDI's I never had that problem again. I can't remember if you have good cycling shoes or not, but if not, definitely get some ASAP. Mine were the best shoe investment EVER.

Yeah canadienne, feelingrandy was saying the same thing. I have some (relatively) inexpensive Specialized shoes. Experienced quite a bit of random foot numbness during the ride. Looks like I'm gonna need some shoes.

Funny thing is, my Achilles heel didn' hurt during the ride, only after. It does feel a bit better today than yesterday.

its just sore then. while riding, you're probably passing more blood through it, and when you stop, it tightens up and your circulation is reduced.

massage it and stretch it.

Since no one mentioned it yet....nice work putting a century under your belt. But what everyone else said is right on, sounds like you put too many miles down all at once, maybe without enough base mile training. It's hard and time consuming to train for centuries though. Just rest, and ice the affected areas. Oh, and full daily dose of a vitamin I (Ibuprofen) for a week or so.
