Photo Editing Program

Sup Guys...

I see many really nice pictures on here, and they look so much crisper and cleaner than the ones I take- and I'm certain it's because I dont have a post-photo program. Recommend me some please, not super expensive..like less than $300!!!

I downloaded the Apple Aperture 2 for 30 days..

for everyday photo editing: Picasa has all the basic features and has great support and a great community

for serious stuff: Photoshop. There is no substitute. Fucking torrent it.

for poor people with a conscience: GIMP. It makes me want to stab my eyes out, but apparently you can get used to it.

For photo processing:

Lightroom > Photoshop

You rarely need the full functionality of Photoshop, and Lightroom is really like Photoshop, but streamlined and optimized for editing tons of photos quickly and artfully. Your choice should come down to Aperture or Lightroom. Richie has provided some guidance on that. My impression is that unless you've done a lot of processing, the tools are both awesome. With Lightroom thus far - after a 9 months of intensive use - I still don't use it's full power. It's awesome.

Lightroom +1

Photoshop for the heavy lifting. (Sharpening, noise reduction, etc.)

Nikon's proprietary Capture NX software for certain RAW files that just aren't cooperating. I'm sure there's a Canon equivalent if that's what you're on.

But yeah, Lightroom 87% of the time.

Sadly, you can't expect SLR quality from most P&S's though. What are you currently shooting with?

hey Derek my long lost ALC tent mate hit me if you are in LA. If you cant find what you want, I have a crack of Adobe "everything they make" for every platform. it's the least I could do in return for the atmospheric torture you endured being my tent mate.

Thanks for your advice guys..I jus got a Canon XSI which takes sweet flicks, but I'm just pretty sure a nice computer program would make the pictures come out to their best potential..

Roadblock-If you could hook me up with a code for Adobe Lightroom I would owe you a fat VeggieBurger and a beer of your choice! You recommend any program btw? Let me know.

Seems like Lightroom is the best so far...

I use FastStone Image Viewer (free) to import/catalog/resize. Really simple and works. Lightroom I like. I'm still trying to play around w/ it but definitely is nice.

I was trying to get my hands on Lightroom, but we had a copy of Aperture 2 here at work. I really like it. It handles batch processing of many images really well, and offers a lot of the necessary adjustments and bells and whistles you see on the photos here.
P chop is still necessary though.
Aperture is rad.
