Rebuilding a campy shifter?
Thread started by 0gravity at 12.20.08 - 6:15 pm

Assuming there are still some riders on this board who use gears, does anyone know if you can get the internals of a campy shifter rebuilt? A shop tech told me the internals are all worn out on my Veloces and I have to buy a new set. Not cheap for campy shifters/brakes. I'd rather repair than buy more crap.

You can rebuild them, but it's unlikely most bike shops will know how to do it, and since a replacement Campy Veloce lever will run $85-100+, it's probably about the same or cheaper as it would cost to order the rebuild kit and pay somebody to do it.

If you've got the time and the skills to do it yourself, it could be an option.

(It's this sort of thing that creates fixie riders.)

The actual gear clutches, small parts that have the incrimental ratchets to select gears, rarely wear out. What happens is the spring that causes their engagement becomes weak over time making your shifter feel mushy. I have rebuilt many of these. The part you are looking for is most likely the G-springs. That is what they are called. I have some shifters that the bodies are broken from crashes but the internal are ok. Let me know if you have 8-9-10speed or if you need the front also. In other words I will have to check to see if I have rears or front shifter to pull parts from.
