where to buy a fixie?
Thread started by wolfpack307 at 05.7.07 - 3:33 pm

hey all,

can anyone recommend a good shop to buy a fixie at in LA? seems like a lot of people are having their bikes custom made, is that my only option? (buy frame, go from there).

i'm in the fairfax village area, will travel from venice to silver lake for a decent shop to work with. budget is $900-$1600.

if you have that much money to put into your bike, you should definitely hand pick a frame and then build around it...

Orange 20 Bikes on Heliotrope and Melrose should be able to sort you out.

Try Orange 20 ( http://www.orange20bikes.com ). They're pretty knowledgeable and friendly. Talk to them. They have a variety of offerings, from the state of the art to the state of the wallet. They also have a big selection of Keirin frames. If the '20 doesn't have what you want I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. Best part is they are right across from Scoops, the best ice cream in LA.

Also Bicycle Kitchen is next door to Scoops making a trip down there definitely worthwhile. If this sounds like an ad for the '20...it isn't. It's an ad for Scoops!!!

Wolfpack307, with a budget like that you have some latitude to get something sweet and hand pick your parts. If aesthetics are important to you, as it is with a lot of fixie riders, check out online galleries and pay a visit to LAfixed.com if you haven't already.

One of the big advantages to doing a build is getting hand built wheels. I've pissed off people 'round here before, but I'll say it again: you tend to get lower quality components on a complete bike. And nuttin' is sweeter than hand built wheels.

Like others said, Orange 20 is the spot. Make sure you talk to Jim C or Killa Kyle, those guys have a lot of experience.

thank you all so much for the recommendations!

i'm definitely going to check out orange 20 as you all have mentioned.

you know, the only reason for the high budget was to avoid too much weight from entry level components and a hefty frame. plus the only real gauge i had for a light weight fixie was the pre-built bianchi pista concept. if it can cost less, that would just be perfect.

all is appreciated! i can't wait!
