Racks & Panniers

Does anyone sell these for less than an arm & a leg? Panniers in particular are unbelievably expensive.
One bit of vanity, I'd prefer a silver rack. Black ones just look too fugly.

i just bought a rack at my local shop yesterday for $20. He had some silver ones too. the brand is axiom. not sure how well it works yet
also performancebike.com has grocery bags on sale for $25 each normally $50 each and they clip on to any pannier rack. They're backordered so I gotta wait until August to get em but they're gonna be sweet when I do...

With panniers and saddlebags you get what you pay for. Just get Ortlieb or Arkel or Carradice, stuff you can depend on. Humble Blackburn racks have worked well for me, they come in silver too.

onelessfixie...which local shop are you referring to? I haven't seen axiom stuff anywhere local.
cabhauler...believe me, I'd love to spring for the good stuff, but those brands you mentioned are just to steep for someone's who's just commuting and not touring. Yet!

I've used a few different rigs and setups for touring and commuting now. While Ortlieb panniers and Tubus racks will last you forever, it doesn't sound like you really need all that added durability if you're just commuting. Besides, I've used Novara panniers and cheap aluminum racks from REI on two tours now and they've held up just fine despite the cheaper materials (and price). Their grocery panniers are pretty cheap and convenient for most uses around town too.

If you're using them for commuting all the more reason to spend the money. You're going to use them almost everyday.

I've been using a ~$30 topeak rack off and on for a few years now and its pretty solid. i had a shitty blackburn rack before that and one of the welds broke the first time i used it, so i would avoid blackburn.
if you want cheap panniers, build some yourself. i made a pair out of some army surplus bags ($10 each) and some straps ($2, can be found on a cheap backpack from a thrift store). you just need to put in some rigid material to keep the back of the bag from hitting the wheel. i used a postal service tote cut to size.

No, my brother has a few times though and he's been happy with the speed of them. He ordered some paniers from Nashbar a few weeks ago when they were on sale for 20 bucks, normally 80. So, unless you need them right away, wait for a good sale.
