Photos lost in limbo

I took a bunch of photos on the Tern of the Century ride last weekend, but deleted them from my camera instad of downloading them.
I understand that there is a way to retrieve the photos from the memory card. I haven't taken any new photos, in the hope that someone out there can help/advise me how I can get the pictures back.
I have tried a few online sites, but they all seem to want $70 for their software. They offer a "demo", but I'm not sure that demo would allow me to get my pictures back. In the meantime, I don't want to download a bunch of junk to my computer and then find out that it won't work.
So, anybody have experience with this?

My memory card went in with the wash.. and i recovered 70 photos.

 Can I assume you saw my post on the Tern of the Century thread about this and that you are not on a Mac? Because, for Mac, Exif Untrasher seems to be the best solution.

There are definitely similar, free options for the PC -- I remember finding them while searching for a Mac application. But I don't remember what any of those are called. Not helpful. But if no one posts info here, I suggest you try to go to digital photography web forums and search their threads. No doubt there will be answers there.

Good luck! I want to see those photos!

 As long as you don't use the card to shoot any additional pics after deleteing the old one they can still be recovered. I shoot for a newspaper and a phot agency and have recovered untold amounts of images from crashed/delted/formatted cards.
