I need some help/advice
Thread started by Lizzard at 06.13.08 - 1:28 pm

My bike was a 10 speed. Now, it is a 6 speed..
It all started when I stretched out two of the sprockets. I would replace the cassette but I have a very strange freehub. The freehub is fully threaded and I can't find a cassette that would fit it. Ive searched a couple of bike stores for these old style cassettes.

I don't have much money to buy a new freewheel.
Anyone got a spare 27" freewheel or know where I can get really old cassettes that would fit this particular freehub?

reply

When I said "freewheel" I meant a rear wheel with a freewheel mechanism. I am not a bike mechanic (yet) and i'm still practicing my bicycle nomenclature.

Um, I think you need to find a new freewheel.

Cassettes don't fit on hubs designed for freewheels, que no?

Local bike shops are a waste of time looking for stuff like that, so you are better off going to the BikeRoWave, the Kitchen, or the Oven. Or you could buy a new rear wheel, with a cassette hub (make sure it is the right hub width to fit your older bicycle frame), and get the right cassette to work with you bike.

Sounds like Lizzard's bike takes an early 6-speed cassette that uses the smallest cog as a lock ring. It threads onto the end of the cassette body and locks the whole thing in place. These are no longer available new and I have never seen one in the parts bins at the Oven.

Just swap out the whole wheel for a six speed freewheel type. Lots of these around.

Oooops! Make that the hub that takes the lock cog, not the cassette body.

I'm guessing that bike's rear wheel takes threaded freewheels. To be sure, just take it to the Kitchen, Oven, or Bikerowave, they have tools to remove freewheels and probably some freewheels in the parts bin. Orange 20 usually has a few freewheels in stock too. There's also plenty on eBay. Suntour Winner or Perfects are your best bet I think.

If you are running friction shifting (which I imagine you are) the number of speeds doesn't matter. Just get something with a similar number of teeth on the lowest gear (biggest cog).
