TRANSNATIONAL CRITICAL MASS RIDE TO TIJUANA POSTPONED/REPLACED
Thread started by Bourgeoisiezee at 12.14.06 - 12:22 pm

Hey Ridazz,
The Transnational Critical Mass Ride originally planned for Dec. 16 from South San Diego to Tijuana is going to be postponed due to political instability within the Mexican government/"parallel government."

Andres Lopez Obrador, the presidential candidate who lost by less than 1% of the vote, has refused to concede. On Nov. 21 2006 he swore himself in as the 'legitimate' president to form a parallel government. An estimated 100,000 supporters gathered around the government building in Mexico City.

As a result of this, and the deadly protests waged against the repressive federal government operating in Oaxaca, we believe it is wise to reconsider the timing of the first known Transnational Critical Mass Ride to Tijuana. Even though Tijuana is quite geographically distanced from Oaxaca, and Mexico City, there is a chance that a Tijuana police officer could confuse or interpret our large bike ride as a protest against, or in support of the above-mentiond forces.

We've been in brief contact with the Tijuana Board of Tourism but it appears now, for the safety of the cyclists on the ride, that we should increase communications with the Board of Tourism to legitimize the ride in the future.

Our goal is not to disrupt Tijuana but to demonstrate that bicycle advocacy is a transnational issue in a fun-spirited, but also safe, and considerate manner.

Our (Americans') high dependency on the automobile is a lifestyle "choice" that may effect the environment(s) and health of people all over the world. Global warming is a transnational issue. Riding our bikes into Tijuana may show some residents there that there are people in the US that are concerned about the price the world pays for US car culture.

Besides that, riding to and around Tijuana is fun!
Spend some money there. Support Mexico.
Create a Tijuana bike scene.

So then, we believe it is best to organize a few smaller "scout" rides around Tijuana. This Saturday (Dec. 16) we will be doing a tighter, smaller scout ride of about 10-20 people from Downtown San Diego to Downtown Tijuana. We will take the ferry into Coronado and ride down the bike-designated Silver Strand lane.

We would like to do about 4 of these rides, each growing in size, before doing a 30-60 person Critical Mass ride.
The name of this ride-to-Tijuana crew will be called "Los Cruzadores." (Spanish translation of The Crossers).

My friends and i have done several 3-7 person crew rides around Tijuana without any trouble.

For more information, or if you would like to participate in a Cruzadores ride after Dec. 16, email us at
southofsingapore@yahoo.com
The date for the larger Transnational Critical Mass ride may be sometime in between March and June. You will be informed.
Also, the image displayed here ( http://i12.tinypic.com/30jmo49.jpg ) is the top of the old flier you may have received at a Midnight Ridazz ride in July, August, or November of 2006. (I was having trouble attaching the image to the topic.)

Thanks,
Randy

sometimes you must "disrupt"to make a difference.even if its within yourself.sometimes you cannot wait for the roads to be thorn-free and paved, and for politics to be bike or group gathering friendly.or for weather to be over 72 degrees to go out to do what you believe in.i say fuck it .didnt know this was going on.someday i will make enough money to keep half of it and be sane enough to buy an amtrak ticket to join this hopefully beer and smoke powered crusade.the man does contrl us with that beer and herb wether we like it or not

this does sound like a fun ride

for future consideration

its about $60 roundtrip from la to sd ($29 each way)
its about a 2h45m trip each way

each train car has 3 bike racks (you hang your bike near the door) and there should be a luggage car on each train (for more bikes)

swarm union station.....take the train to sd.........ride from sd to tj....do whatever..........ride back.......take the train back to la

and i'm pretty sure your round trip ticket is good for 30 days, so you can ride the train back whenever you want
