A CHAMPION cyclist was killed in a crash with a van while training on January 15th.

Commonwealth Games competitor Jason MacIntyre, 33, who broke Scots cycling legend Graham Obree's [aka The Flying Scotsman] 10-mile time trial record last year, was taken to hospital after the accident but died of his injuries.

He leaves a wife and twin eight-year-old girls.

The crash happened at 1.34pm on the north side of Fort William, where Lochgilphead-born Jason had lived since he was 10.

Scottish Olympic and world cycling medallist Craig MacLean said last night: "Jason was a really nice guy. His death is a sad loss to the world of cycling.

"I 's very tragic. I think Jason was being considered for the Olympic squad in Beijing later this year and that would have been the pinnacle of his career."

Although a veteran in sporting terms, Jason, who only took up cycling at 18, had trained hard in recent years and put up some of the best times by a British rider.

He was looking forward to the new season, writing on New Year's Day on his blog: "Having made it through Christmas and now New Year, albeit overfed and overweight, I'm looking forward to January and 2008 to see what it brings."

Jason, who worked as a printer, was selected to represent Scotland in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
