Hello biker friends!
I just arrived in LA a few days ago and i don't have a car. I know this is most definitely a driving city, and not biker friendly, but i really want to get into the biking habit! I think it's fun, and i bet it'll get me in shape.
That being said, i have NO IDEA what bike to get. I'm mostly going to use it to commute to my school which is about 20 minutes from my house, and according to google maps, it's mostly flat.
I am 22, 5'7, and honestly quite inexperienced in the bike game.
Any one have any advice of what kind of bike i need to get in a city like LA with my situation in mind?

get a commuter bike!

there are some really really good ones out there... Im leaning towards investing ina Rivendale... but those are expensive.

Touring bikes are good in the used department.

Look for a good condition,used hybrid bike. Don't spend too much money on it. After you ride for a month or so, you'll know better what kind of bike works best for you.

My two cents is that a decent (steel frame, geared, 700 wheels), inexpensive ($150-200) road bike off Craigslist is the place to start. Probably something from the 80s or 90s. Nothing too fancy. It'll take a little time and a little research to learn what is what and find something good, but that bike would serve you well as a commuter and also make more ambitious riding possible as time goes on.

CoCo's Variety at Riverside and Fletcher usually has a bunch of decent used bikes on hand.

I'll second Coco's - you'll pay a bit more, but they won't sell you junk.

Also plan on investing in a good lock (learn how to use it properly) and a decent set of lights.

Biking in Los Angeles has never been better!
