Should I Use Runyon Canyon?
Thread started by Antranik at 08.16.11 - 1:46 pm

I'm going to go riding out today from the middle of the san fernando valley and end up at melrose and fairfax to go to "Da Poetry Lounge" which is absolutely off the hook...

Anyway, google maps tells me to use the Cahuenga pass... But I want to try an alternative route... Can I go from the valley to the LA basic using something like Runyon Canyon from Laurel Canyon/Mulholland drive?

I don't mind it being much more difficult because I thought I was going to have to go through the sepulveda pass, which I love, and was looking forward to actually..

What do you guys think? Or I could just take the red line, but that's boring.

reply

just use cahuenga ;)

There's a strong lobby of people who are trying to keep bikes off of that trail.

You could get away with it, but you will come across a lot of pissed off hikers with their dogs.

As far as I know bikes are not welcome on Runyon Cyn.

If you want an adventure, try this.

(Note: includes off-roading.)

Runyon is also fun, but better done late at night when no one is going to hassle you for riding through there. It is pretty heavily used during its open hours.

I used to ride both Runyan and the route Sean posted. It was nice riding, but you will have to deal with lots of hikers and dogs during daylight hours. And technically part of the route uses the Dearing trail which according to the "man": No mountain bikes are allowed on the Dearing Trail.

Nice! Thank you for the tips everybody, especially you sean! I haven't actually been on Runyon canyon before so I was wondering if this would be a good time.

The route through franklin canyon looks awesome, it runs parallel to cold water canyon, woohoo!

Oh yeah, quick question, is the off-roading really rugged? I have two friends going with me who are taking road-bikes like me.

It's a wide dirt hiking trail, so it is not super crazy single-track or anything. But going that way it will be uphill. To me, that is actually easier because you have better control over your speed, but to some it might be harder, I guess. The hardest part is maybe just making sure you take the left turn after Tree People up to Mulholland and don't keep going around the Wilacre loop.

I've rode up Runyon during the day time. I don't recommend it, because it is very crowded with walkers, dogs & children who aren't really paying attention. Try it if you like, but you can imagine the awkwardness of pedaling up a steep grade in the midst of the crowd of pedestrians.

Go with the Royal Academy's Franklin Canyon route. It's pretty, serene and avoids most of the traffic hazards.

Nichols cyn which you can catch off of Hollywood blvd. near Farfax is a good climb.
It goes all the way to Mullholand drive and has minimal traffic.

I guess I'm too late to give you advice, but riding Runyon Canyon is a lot of fun. Just remember that it is mostly for people running and walking their dogs so go slow and be respectful.
