Recording Audio While Riding
Thread started by trickmilla at 08.15.11 - 12:44 pm

I'm reaching out the Sound / Audio / Tech Nerds & Gurus

I'm trying to come up with a really cheap plan for recording great audio with a digital recorder for a minimal amount of money and with a minimum number of specialized tools.

This is what I am working with:
H1 Zoom recorder with windscreen.

and a hotshoe suspension thing like this
right now it works great for recordings under 15 miles per hour, but i want something that will work at higher speeds and in a headwind.

I'm trying to decide if I should make something bigger for my back rack:

This looks like a good solution

but I need something that that will allow me to easily access the controls of the recorder.

thoughts? ideas?

If you can get access to a high quality analog mic with a windscreen, you can hack an old iPod into doing high quality audio capture:

Not exactly what you're looking for, but it's a good solution.

Go to Coffey Sound on Cahuenga. They know EVERYTHING about anything sound related and are super friendly

So this is what I have so far.
I found a silverware basket from Ikea that we had around the house.
I cut & pried of some pieces of wire that were in my way with some needlenose pliers.

then i made some suspension from old innertube that I cut to the right length.

I found a swatch of fake fur at the fashion / fabric district in DTLA it was $4 which is pretty good because most people charge $20 a yard for the fake fur with a 1 yard minimum.

I still have to attach the fake fur to the cage and attach the cage to my bike some how.

I want to do a test on the back rack and see if I can mount it to the handle bars.

This thing would look ridiculous on my head.

Some of the upcoming challenges will be mounting the fake fur in a way that stilll allows me easy acces to the controls of the h1 zoom recorder and mounting the rig to my bike in a way that it doesn't cause any rattling or other noises that can bb picked up by the mic.

I tested the thing as is just holding the rig infront of a fan at full blast (must have been 30mph+ wind ... and it sounded really clean!

I'll report back when I have some more progress.

I bungeed the whole thing to my back rack and the recording sounding like shit.
Its not the wind though. It vibrations from the bike.

I'm going to try using mini bungees for suspension and try and put a piece of foam between the rack & "the blimp"

If you can, try to get Pro sound foam. It will totally kill the vibrations and give you a clean sound. I've used it a bunch of times on different tv/movie shoots.

Thanks.
I'm trying to rely mostly on household type stuff to keep the budget down,
but I'm willing to get some pro audio stuff if I have to.
