A bike for a friend
Thread started by Two_Feet at 08.14.11 - 5:00 pm

I’m looking to buy a bike with a friend, she is 5'2' and a budget of 450-500 dollars. In terms of brands/ specs/ additional stuff specs for a fixie and or geared new. I never bought a new bike before so Im not even sure how to go about doing that

reply

With that budget, you can buy a pretty nice bike.

What is she going to be using it for?

Does she have a preference for aluminum (lighter, stiffer) or steel (slightly heavier, springier/softer ride)?

Geared / fixie?

Something like this for $399 wouldn't be a half-bad new fixie - http://bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott_pro.htm

Alternately, she could get a heck of a cool used road bike off of craigslist for $200-400, and then spend $50-100 at one of the bike co-ops giving it a tune-up and some fresh tires/bar-wrap/accessories/etc. Something like this - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/bik/2546531878.html

Her best bet would be to go in to as many bike shops as possible and try out as many different bikes as she can, and get a sense of what size and style she wants.

She's got a whole world of options.

A couple of tips:

1. DO NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH A BIKE AT FIRST SIGHT. (This is hard to avoid, but gets expensive quickly. BTDT.)

2. Buy a u-lock.

3. Buy a helmet.

4. Buy lights.

Good luck!

Your friend is short, so make sure she gets a bike that fits her. I'm also short and for me that meant a 48cm women's road bike with top tube that is a little shorter (less of a reach to the handle bars) than the men's version of the bike.

^ Agreed. Most women need shorter top tubes than men. Do not rely too heavily on fitting charts, they are typically sized for men. Test-riding the bike is essential.

fuji has a decent priced entry level track bike with 650 wheels for shorter women.

My wife is 5'2 and I got her the KHS flite 223L which is a ladies bike...she loves it!!
It's a 48cm.... Nothing too special, but definitely a good bang for buck...

I didn't pay retail either..
