Looks like all the bikey stuff in NYC is not free!!!!

The New York Police Department plans to step up enforcement of bicycle safety in parts of the city that have seen a disproportionately higher rate of collisions involving bicyclists, city officials said Thursday.

The initiative, which would be aimed at common cycling infractions like running red lights or riding on the sidewalk, comes after numerous complaints about two-wheeled scofflaws and recent protests against new bicycle lanes added to streets in Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan.

“We’ve installed 250 miles of lane over the last four years and thousands of new bike racks,” Janette Sadik-Khan, the city’s transportation commissioner, said at a news conference. “We have been friendly to cyclists. Now it’s time for cyclists to be friendlier to the city.”

Ok when LA installs 250 miles of bike lanes I'll be more friendly too. Until then, fuck you, fuck your fuckin' pizza, and fuck Frank Sinatra

I always get confused by that latin stuff, as i didn't start attended catholic school until the mid 80s and never studied to be a doctor.

But as far as improved cycling infrastructure being an "equal exchange" for stepped up enforcement of cycling safety, i'm not sure I get the point.

Its to be expected, that if cyclists become a bigger part of the total transportation solution the riding habits of cyclists are going to have more of an impact on society as a whole.

What we will need to protect against is police using selective enforcement as a form of social control. And NYC does have some fucked up safety laws. (I had a friend get a ticket in NYC for wearing all black).

Along with demanding appropriate infrastructure, we need to also evolve the vehicle code, so we don't end up getting tickets for bullshit laws that are primarily aimed at drivers in car-centric city.

but how is this a Quid Pro Quo?

Explain yourself young man.

Isnt Quid Pro Quo "This for That"

So I'd guess what they're trying to say is, we've given you 250 miles of bike lanes, so stop riding the wrong way on the sidewalks and bunny hopping over the cars stuck in traffic on Broadway or something like that.

Why is this a problem? The police should be allowed to tackle anyone riding a bicycle on the sidewalk at anything faster than a walking pace.

This statement made me think of the once popular Latin phrase:

“We have been friendly to cyclists. Now it’s time for cyclists to be friendlier to the city.”

I think cyclist should always follow the laws and the rotten apples spoiling the bunch is bullshit but I also think it is bullshit to tie cycling infrastructure to proper cycling behavior. As if the scofflaws continue the infrastructure will stop.

Under that same logic we should start ripping out freeways because everyone is speeding.
